'Your dad wasn't in an accident.' She repeated. 'I'd hate for you to know like this but I would never keep something like this from someone.'
Tobi exchanged a look with me and after a few seconds, asked. 'How did he die?'
'It's nothing personal. We're Helix, your dad used to work for us. The circumstances surrounding how he left was unforgivable.' She was starting to get into her car.
'You killed my dad because he left your company?!' Tobi yelled at her. I had never seen him fight, even with a guy but it was looking like it with how angry he looked.'
'It's much more than that. Please, ask your mom to explain. I would hate for bad things to happen to you because of your ignorance.'
'Because of my ignorance? Because of my-' He yelled again and threw his right fist at her. She caught his fist and flipped him like a baby.
I just stood there watching, angry at and afraid of this mysterious woman.
'I will only allow that this one time.' She said, looked at me and got into the car.
I put my hand out to raise Tobi up. He stood up and my stupid brother still managed to make a joke.
'She's definitely daddy's ex-lover. You owe me.'
'The fuck? Fuck you Tobi, you're still joking in a time like this.' I said and I punched his arm.
'Let's go meet mom alright. Let's see what this crazy woman is talking about.' He said.
We got into the house and talked to my mom. She explained everything about Helix to us. She was very explicit about how dangerous they were and that we shouldn't try to avenge my dad.
Tobi didn't listen and did extensive research on the secret operations of Helix. He sent his research to a local newspaper the day we started summer break.
They kidnapped him the next day.
**** 1 month ago.
They kidnapped Tobi four months ago. His article never got published. School had resumed last month and my mom still didn't try to rescue him from Helix. I started to wonder if she was just cowardly or she never loved either of us.
I already told my neighbor, Kevin about what was going on with Tobi hoping he would help in a way.
I was at his place stil talking about Tobi when my phone rang. I picked up the call and heard Tobi's voice.
'Hello Temi.'
My heart sank immediately. I couldn't breathe. I was listening to my brother for the first time in four months. He was not dead!
I felt an intense wave of relief that he was alive and an even more depressing feeling of sadness and guilt because I couldn't tell if he was suffering or not.
'Hello Temi ode, I had no idea you're deaf now?' He asked. It was really him. He insulted me all the time. There was so much I wanted to say to my stupid annoying brother.
'Hello Tobi. Is that you?' I finally asked.
Kevin turned back and looked at me. I freaked and ran out of his house.
'We met at your dad's funeral. You should remember.'
'Shine.'
'Ding ding.'
'What do you want with Tobi?'
'Nothing much, you'll see in time. He'll be fine.'
'So you won't hurt him?'
'That depends.'
'On what?'
'That kid you talk to, your neighbor.'
'Kevin?'
'Yes, Kevin. I think he's too smart for his own good and I really don't like kids like that.'
'I'll stay away from him.'
'No no no. That's not what I want. My instincts tell me that he'll find a way to stop me and I can't let that. So here's how you'll ensure your brother comes home for Christmas in one piece; You keep working with Kevin, you find out who he's talking to, learn what he learns. If I die because of something he does, so do you, Tobi, the little piece of shit Kevin boy and even your mom.'
'You're seriously this scared of children.'
'I'm not. I'm just cautious.'
'Can I talk to Tobi again?'
'No.' She said sharply. 'I'll be in touch.' She said and hung up.
I didn't even think much about it. I knew I would have to betray Kevin later but it was to save my brother. Anybody would understand.
*** Monday evening. Right before Temi went to Kevin's house and they kissed**
I was eating pancakes and scrolling through my Instagram page. I felt particularly happy because I could see Tobi in two days; Kevin told me Viva planned to let Shine take him on Wednesday so that she'll release Tobi.
He also said Viva's partner would shoot Shine when she's having lunch on Friday. This had to be the best week of my life because my brother would be safe and my dad would be avenged too.
I got a phonecall and picked it up.
'Hello.' I said to the phone.
'Hello Temi. I've missed you.' A female voice said. I recognized the voice and my pancakes became bitter. It was Shine.
'I'll take that as a I miss you too.' She said again after I didn't say anything.
'How is Tobi?' I finally asked.
'Dead.'
'What?!' I yelled at the phone. Tears had welled up in my eyes. I was more than angry at this woman. I'm going to kill her. I thought.
'Haha. I'm kidding. Your brother is good, talk to him.' She said. She was having fun with my misery.
'Tobi. Tobii. Are you there?'
'Yeah. See Temi, I'm fine. You shouldn't do what sh-'
'Thank God Tobi. I thought she killed you, she said you were dead.' I interrupted him. My tears were dropping in full flow now.
'She won't kill me. She needs me to get to Viva.' I heard what sounded like someone grabbing the phone.
'Okay, enough chitchat. Your brother is fine. Time to keep your end of the deal.'
'What?'
'You know what I'm talking about. Our deal was, you tell me what Kevin knows and I keep your brother safe so go on.' She said. 'How am I in danger?'
'Viva is going to arrange for you to find him on Wednesday and after you release Tobi, he has a partner that will kill you while you're having lunch in KFC on Friday. He knows you won't kill him immediately and you'll want to torture him first.' I said.
I just foiled Viva's plan and put him and his partner's life in danger. I was such a terrible person.
'Oooh. Wow, that's interesting. Thanks for being co-operative. Christmas is coming early for you. Your brother is coming home this weeek.' She said and hung up.
I cleaned my tears and walked to my bathroom. There wasn't much I could do now. I could only tell Kevin not to get himself in Viva's plan and possibly save him from danger. I washed my face with water and got set to climb over to Kevin's house. _____________________ Konichiwa. I failed you guys again and updated late. Forgive me, I broke my phone. I even stole my mom's phone to update.
