I was suddenly just so angry that I was living in fear of this kind of attack. Why? Because we were different. Because we weren't human, and we didn't live in the darkness, and so we were attacked from both sides, always having...
As soon as I burst through the front door I noticed that Kai was standing there as if he was waiting for me. I looked to him and then around to the living room, he just shook his head and nodded towards the door to Baen's office. I let out a sigh of relief and then tried to book it to my room where I could quickly lock myself in for the next three days. Kai apparently saw my intentions in my eyes because he stepped in front of me, effectively blocking my path. I put my hands together in a silent prayer as I looked up at him pathetically. He just sighed and grabbed my wrist and just as we turned to hide, we heard his voice. I felt a chill run down my back as I looked at Kai and pleaded with my eyes, but whether or not he would have saved me we would never know because it was then that Magnus found us,
"Eerie! It's been far too long, my dear." I glared at him as he grabbed my hand out of Kai's and pulled me closer to him. He then looked at Kai with disdain. "Kai." Kai just rolled his eye at him and crossed his arms over his chest. I sighed in defeat as I looked at one of two vampires that I knew that were almost as old as Baen. I then began to look around behind Magnus for the other one. That was when I heard the shrill voice that I hadn't missed the last couple of years as Magnus's twin sister Morrigan all but launched herself at Kai. I heard him growl upon impact with the feisty redhead who had clearly been lusting after Kai for the last couple of hundred years at least. Magnus's affections for me, on the other hand, are rather recent. Kai and I both looked to Baen to end this madness since the two of us had made it perfectly clear that we were not interested. He gave us an apologetic look as he mouthed,
"It's only for two days." I rolled my eyes and had to fight back the squirm I was feeling by being so close to Magnus. Don't get me wrong though, he was drop-dead gorgeous like many of our kind were, with the same deep red hair and bright green eyes as his sister. He was tall and muscular, but he was an ass clown. Magnus hasn't been told no since probably before Jesus was born, and I guess his charming ways didn't work on me, which was basically him barking orders and me swooning I became his conquest. I groaned as I pulled my hand out of his only to see disappointment in his eyes as he said with a faint smile,
"Ah, I thought that maybe you had finally succumbed to my charms." I wiped my hand on my jeans and said,
"You have a better chance of charming a dragon." He scowled and I could feel the energy building in the room. I glared up at him and said through my teeth,
"If you make lightning streak through this house again I swear I will rip your mind apart to the point you will only be able to suck blood through a straw." His eyes widened, but he must have believed me because the built-up energy began to dissipate. I then heard a shriek that would have put a banshee to shame and looked over to Kai and Morrigan. He had forcibly removed himself from her, and she was not too happy about it. I had finally had enough with their superpower temper tantrums. I grabbed Kai's hand and pulled him up the stairs after me as I carefully let my mind slip into Baen's and told him that this was his alliance issue and that he needed to deal with it before Kai and I did, and he would not like that outcome. I chanced a look back at him as I reached the top of the stairs and saw him nod in agreement.
Kai and I sat on my bed as we watched the movies that I had gotten him for Christmas, and he looked through the translation dictionary with a look of confusion on his face. I laughed at him as I said,
"It's really not that hard." He glared at me over the book and said,
"These aren't even letters. It's all just squiggles. How did you learn this?" I shrugged as I took the book from his hands,
"I was super young, and I grew up with it, in fact, I didn't learn English until I went to school." I laughed to myself, "Now that was funny, here I was a little Russian girl attending an all American school during the cold war. The teachers asked me so many questions thinking that I was a little spy." He sat up and he asked,
"I was six, and I was born here." He shrugged as he leaned back against my headboard again,
"Stranger things have happened." I eyed him skeptically,
"Like what?"
"Like getting turned into a vampire that now has freaky mind powers." I laughed as I let myself fall back at the foot of the bed,
"You do have a point there." I then turned on my side so that I could face him,
"So, how did you change when you were turned?" He smiled,
"You know it was the weirdest thing, I suddenly craved blood." I let out a sound of disgust as I let myself fall onto my back again,
"Why won't you tell me your superpower?" I felt Kai go still,
"What if I don't have one yet? I'm still pretty young in vampire years." I looked up at my ceiling
"You are 230 years old, so not a toddler like me, maybe an insolent teen." He threw my pillow at me and I laughed, "You have a superpower or you wouldn't be so secretive about it, and you haven't perfected it yet or else you would be showing it off." I could hear him chuckle,
"When did you get to know me so well?"
"The twelve years that you've tortured me." He snorted,
"You call it torture, I call it training." Suddenly my stomach made a noise, and we both looked down at it. "Why is it you have to eat both real food and drink blood?" I shrugged,
"I'm just special, I guess." I rubbed my stomach as I asked, "What are the chances I could convince you to bring me some food?" He gave me a look that clearly said my chances were slim to none. I sighed as I pulled myself off the bed and walked over to my closest and shoved my feet into a pair of chucks and pulled on a coat. I then walked over to my window and slid it open. Kai then sat up straighter on my bed as he asked,
"Where are you going?" I smiled as I sat on the ledge of the window,
"To find food, you coming?" He looked from me to the door and back before he leaped off of the bed and grabbed his boots as he said,
"Hell, yes."

It felt like longer than the few hours that Eerie was gone dealing with her family's unexpected, and gauging from her reaction, unwelcome guests. I sighed heavily for what felt like the millionth time as I stared up at my ceiling. I was bored without her around. I had never been bored before, and now without Eerie's cheerful presence, I was bored out of my mind. I knew that I should probably go for a run to clear my head or clean my weapons to make sure that they were in perfect condition, but I couldn't seem to get the energy to move, that was until I heard a knock on my door. I sat up and waited to see if I was just imagining it, but there it was again louder this time. I leaped over the back of the couch in my rush to the door and ripped open the door to see the girl I was just thinking about holding a large pizza and a six pack of beer. As soon as she saw me her eyes lit up, and she smiled as she asked,
"Miss me?" My heart felt like it was caught in my throat so I did the only thing I could think of, I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close. I heard her giggle as she said, "I'm going to take that as a yes." I then heard another voice behind her say,
"As touching as this is, can we please do it inside; I'm freezing my ass off here." As I tensed I felt Eerie sigh in defeat as she muttered,
"Remind me not to rescue you next time." He scoffed as he pushed his way past us into my apartment and said,
"You didn't rescue me, you wanted a ride to get pizza and visit your boyfriend." I looked down at Eerie as she shrugged,
"Two birds, one stone." I smiled and took the pizza from her as we followed Kai into the apartment. I set the pizza on the table as I watched Kai mess around with my TV and asked,
"What are you doing?" He looked up just as the TV came to life,
"Did you know that this was unplugged?" I shrugged,
"I don't really watch it much." He just rolled his eyes and tried to flip through the channels, except all he got was static because I didn't have cable. He sighed,
"Let me guess, no cable?" I nodded as I sat on the couch in front of the pizza, and Eerie said as she sat beside me,
"Why don't we watch a movie? We can hook your tablet into the TV and watch it that way." I nodded and we both looked to Kai who sighed again as he sat at the end of the couch and said,
"As long as it's not in Russian, I'm game." I looked at Eerie and raised my eyebrow. She just laughed and said,
"I gave Kai his Christmas present today." I smiled,
"Let me guess, Russian movies." She nodded,
"Yep, and a Russian to English dictionary." I couldn't help the laugh that burst out of my chest as I said,
"You are evil." Her eyes gleamed,
"Inogda." I then lowered my head so that I could whisper in her ear,
"I like it when you are sometimes evil." I felt her shiver, but I wasn't certain if it was from my words or my proximity, but before I could find out, I remembered that we had company as he said,
"Can we cut the cuddling crap and get this show on the road?" I heard what sounded like a growl come from Eerie as she said,
"You could always go home if we are boring you." He shook his head,
"Not without you, I'm not facing those two alone. They give me the creeps." I eyed the two of them hoping I could get more of the story of their unexpected guests, and I guess Eerie saw the curiosity in my eyes and she said,
"The reason that Kai called me earlier was because some friends of our family came to visit. They usually like to visit different friends every year, and seeing as we had them the year before last they shouldn't be here. When I say friends, I mean it very loosely, they are business associates of Baen. Kai and I are in charge of entertaining their twins who are about our age, who have decided that they are in love with us." I felt my jaw clench as I waited for her to continue, "We usually spend the time that they are here avoiding them like the plague that they are." I felt myself relax a bit as I asked,
"So you guys don't like them at all?" Both of them made the same face of pure disgust as they said,
"Not even a little bit." Eerie then hit play and the room was instantly engulfed in the epic music of Star Wars.
By the end of the movie Eerie and I had finished the large Hawaiian pizza and all of the beers while Kai passed out with his coat over his face, that was until his phone began to buzz which caused him to shoot up as he brought it to his ear. The conversation was very one-sided with lots of "yeses, of courses and I understands." Once he ended the call he then looked to Eerie and said,
"Duty calls little sister." She just sighed as she nodded. She then leaned over and kissed my cheek before she said,
"I'll call you later, okay?" I just nodded as I watched her stand up and walk out of my apartment with Kai.
