"Why, exactly, am I being sent to the medical ward?" Jinx asked sharply, her arms crossed over her chest as she stared at Nick in annoyance. The man sighed, shaking his head lightly."I've already told you, Jinx," he said slowly. "He injected you with something and we have to check if all of your vitals are normal. It could have damaged you internally."
"I feel fine," Jinx snapped, frowning. She hated the idea of being poked and prodded at. Doctors and scientists especially unnerved her.
"You are going to do this," Nicholas told her firmly, turning to look at her in the eyes.
"And if I don't?" the young female asked crossly, giving him a small smirk.
Nicholas stood there for a moment, his brows slightly furrowed. Jinx waited for him, satisfaction filling her before Nick spoke with a small smile.
"Or else you won't get your armor back."
It took Jinx a moment to process his words. She stood there, stunned, her mouth slightly agape and her eyes wide. Nicholas chuckled at her awed state and turned to leave the room. Jinx shook herself out of her amazing state and called after Nick.
"You have my armor?" she asked incredulously. She quickly jogged to catch up with him, seeing as he was already walking down the hallway.
Nick looked at her with a soft smile and nodded.
"I do. It is in the tech wing, as of right now. Our engineers are repairing it," he said. "And they are giving it a few modifications as well."
"Like what?" the girl asked curiously, falling into step beside him.
"Blaster protection," Nicholas said slowly, his voice dropping a significant amount. Nick's face turned grim as his mind flickered back to the moment of their first interaction. He let her get shot. It was his fault.
"How's your wound?" he asked quickly, glancing at her from the corner of his eyes.
Jinx turned to look straight forward and replied with a brisk, "Fine." She wrung her hands behind her back, her shoes clicking on the ground.
"Fine?" Nick questioned, giving her a hard stare. "Just fine?"
"I can't feel it much, so it's fine," she responded with a shrug of her shoulders.
A blank look washed over Nick's face as he said, "We will also have to get that checked out at the medical ward."
"No?" Jinx started. "That is not happening."
Nick stopped, causing Jinx to stop too. He gave her a small smile and said, "Too late, hun. It already is."
As his sentence ended, a pair of double doors across the hall opened and standing before them was an older gentleman dressed in a white coat, a data pad gripped loosely in his hands. He smiled brightly at the two when he looked up, dimples in his cheeks showing.
"Ah, Xenos, sir!" the man said brightly. "Right on time." He turned to Jinx, his eyes softening in remorse.
"And you must be Jinx," he said, outstretching his hand. "Doctor Ulanas, it's splendid to finally meet you."
Jinx stared at his hand for a moment before hesitantly taking it, giving it a small shake. Ulanas turned back to Nick, the smile leaving his face.
"We have set up laboratory five for her, sir," the doctor said. "We have joint teams four and eight on standby. We also have force sector A-11 ready as well."
"Sounds good. Excellent work, Doc, as usual."
The older man smiled, responding with a quick, "And we will take excellent care of her. No shenanigans like the young men have seemed to fall prey to lately." He flashed a sympathetic look at Jinx. Her nerves were slowly easing, her uncomfortable stature draining into a more relaxed feeling. She felt better, knowing this man had Nick's trust.
"Now I will go oversee the preparations as they finish up, we can only have the best for our VIP patient." He smiled as he titled his head and slightly rubbed Jinx on her shoulder. "I will be right back to get her."
The old man waddled off, turning down a hallway to his destination. Nicholas turned to Jinx, taking off his mask after making sure no one was around.
"He has been with me for years. He has saved my life more than a few times. He won't let anything happen to you," Nicholas said as he placed his hand on Jinx's shoulder. Jinx was tense, but not as tense as usual. "Plus, I'll be in and out to check on you and your test results. I'll never be more than a minutes walk from you at any time." Nicholas added to further comfort Jinx. The small female stood there, looking at Nicholas before hugging him.
"I trust you," she said quickly, her head burrowed in Nick's chest. She had grown quite comfortable in Nick's embrace. She felt vulnerable yet protected at the same time.
"Thank you," Nicholas said, smiling down at her. He then leaned down and kissed her forehead, sending a chill through her whole body as blood rushed to her cheeks. Nicholas separated from Jinx and slid his mask on as Ulanas turned the corner. Nicholas slightly rubbed Jinx on her cheek, which didn't help with the blushing.
"Would you please follow me, Ms. Jinx?" the man asked as he grinned at Xenos and Jinx.
Jinx gave a curt nod as she looked away from Nicholas and disappeared into the medical wing.
