The ending of this part is a few chapters from now. The story continues normally through the chapters, so don't be confused. It's just the names connect.
Sean
I follow Mark in to see a man, who I'm assuming is Mark's father, laying unmoving in a hospital bed. A woman in pink scrubs walks around the corner. "Hi Mark! Who's your friend?" Mark looks hesitant until she adds "it's okay, she doesn't get off until four.""Hi Julia. This is Sean."
"I go by jack normally," I finish for him. I shake her hand.
"I'm Julia, Mark's Dad's hospice nurse." Hospice? Mark's dad is dying?! Mark walks over to the hospital bed and sits next to his father.
"How is he today?"
"His respiration's are shallow and his heart rate is weaker. I've upped his morphine drip but Mark, honey, he's at the max."
"I know," he says quietly, brushing his dads hair out of his face. I walk next to him and gently put my hand on his shoulder, giving a light squeeze. He wipes a tear off of his cheek. He leans down, next to his ear. "I love you dad. Dee does too. We'll both be okay when you go, okay? Don't listen to her. She's just sad. We all are. Tom had to go back to school, but he'll be okay. He already got to come home to say goodbye." By the time he finishes, I'm also crying. I wipe my tears away. He sighs, and moves the hair out of his face again. I walk around to his dad, squatting to lean down next to his ear. Mark looks at me, confused.
"You've raised a wonderful man, Mr. Fishbach. He's one of the kindest, most genuine people I've ever met. You did amazingly," I whisper. His heart rate picks up and Mark begins to cry. Julia pats his back when he puts his head in his hands. The door slams open, and Julia's mood visibly shifts. She becomes closed off, and moves to check the multiple pumps moving medication into Mr. Fishbach.
"MARK!! WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?! WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME YOU PLANNED ON HAVING FRIENDS OVER?!" A woman, who I'm assuming is Dee, screams before hitting Mark in the arm. "He doesn't even LOOK LIKE SOMEONE WHO WOULD WASTE TIME ON A LOWLIFE LIKE YOU!!" She hits him again, hard, in the stomach this time. "Are you going to introduce us or not imbecile??" I've never seen Mark so small and afraid.
"Dee, t-this is J-Jack. Jack, this is m-my stepmother, D-D-Dee." He manages to stutter out.
"Stop the stuttering, crying, BULLSHIT Mark!! It's not like it's YOUR husband dying from cancer!!" She smacks him hard across the face. She draws back to punch him, but I quickly step in the way, earning a very very hard right hook. She got me right in the cheek bone, and I can already feel the swelling, however, I'm more worried about Mark.
"You're right. Your husband is dying, and I'm extremely, extremely sorry about that Mrs. Fishbach. I am. But Mark's dad is dying. His FATHER. I can't even begin to IMAGINE the kind of pain he is in. So it does NOT make it okay for you to hit and berate him!! He loves you! He needs you, so he can lean on someone who DOES know what he's going through!" I'm yelling by the halfway point of my speech. Everyone in the room is shocked to silence, although Julia slowly begins to smile.
"I...You're right. This isn't okay. I'm so, so sorry Mark. I just hurt so much. I don't know what to do. I'm sorry." She starts to sob.
"I know," he stands and hugs her. "I know."
