It was the second day of school and people were already talking about Homecoming, though it was a month away. Frank sighed. He couldn't wait until Mr. Blofis began his lesson, but he was having trouble getting up the PowerPoint. Eventually, Annabeth helped him and Mr. Blofis told the class to quiet down.
"Class, we're going to have a project," Mr. Blofis said after he gave a lecture about the Iliad.
"Is it a group project?" Nico asked.
"No," Mr. Blofis said and the entire class cheered. "You guys will be working in pairs. Then, I will assign each pair a two characters whose relationship you will examine."
The whole class groaned.
"Do we get to pick our partners?" Percy asked.
"Yes," Mr. Blofis said.
The classroom turned into a zoo. Everyone was trying to find a partner. Frank looked around and saw that the only unpartnered people were Drew, Clovis, and Hazel. Hazel stepped next to Frank and Drew rolled her eyes at Clovis.
"Alright class," Mr. Blofis. "I'm going to assign each pair two characters. The characters may overlap between groups. You will be presenting on September the 20th."
"But that's the Monday after Homecoming!" Drew protested.
"No worries," Mr. Blofis said. "You have an entire month to work on this project."
"What?" Clovis said. "I'm awake."
Drew rolled her eyes and the class tittered.
"Alright, Drew and Clovis have Agamemnon and Briseis," Mr. Blofis said. "Frank and Hazel get to study Andromache and Hector. Percy and Annabeth get to study Briseis and Patroclus. Nico and Will can study Patroclus and Achilles. Reyna and Jason can study Helen and Paris. Leo and Calypso can study Zeus and Hera. Travis and Katie can study Helen and Menelaus. Silena and Beckendorf can study Aphrodite and Hephaestus. Grover and Juniper can study Odysseus and Ajax. Rachel and Octavian can study Hector and Achilles. Piper and Connor can study Glaucus and Diomedes."
The class bell rang.
"I expect your projects to be good," Mr. Blofis said, "since you have a whole month to do it."
Frank shuffled out of the classroom. He felt a tapping on his shoulder and saw Hazel. She had been in some of his classes last year, but he didn't know her that well. He noticed that she was short and pretty with large golden eyes, curly hair, and a sweet face.
"Would you want to come to my house tomorrow to work on our project?" Hazel asked.
Frank nodded. Hazel smiled and skipped away. Frank saw her greet her boyfriend. Hazel kissed Jacob on the cheek.
Frank's shoulders slumped. He would be the only one going to Homecoming alone. Maybe he should just stay home. His last two girlfriends had only dated him so that he would do their homework.
"Hey Frank, why do you look so down?" Jason asked.
"I don't have a girlfriend," Frank admitted.
"I could set you up on a date with Piper," Jason offered. "She's been single since she broke up with Michael over the summer."
"Thanks, bro," Frank said. "You're the best."
He walked to his next class with a goofy grin on his face.
