𝐁ROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
  SEPTEMBER 8th, 1989

I ran downstairs with urgency.

I didn't even tell my mom or my dad about the party.

It was 7:00pm, the party started in another hour. But I wasn't really focused on getting there on time because black people don't ever go the exact time.

I was going to get there around 9pm.

I made it down the stairs, and I looked at the doorknob. My mom was currently coming inside from work and I let out a sigh of relief.

Although I love my father, if i was to ask him about this party... he would go ballistic. He would automatically say no.

My mom on the other hand, would ask a few questions and then give me a look as if she wants me to rethink my decision. But I never really rethink anything so she'll most likely say something like if anything happens it's on me. She'll eventually urge to yes.

My mom entered inside the house I gave her a huge smile.

I needed to start off the interaction on a good note.

"Hey mom!" I say, going up to her and hugging her.

I could feel she was uncomfortable because I rarely hug any of my parents and I'm not a really expressive person when it comes to showing affection.

She hugged me back put pulled away.

"What do you want?" She asks and I furrow my eyebrows.

"I cant hug my wonderful mother?" I say and she stares at me.

She gave me the death stare and I honestly gave in.

I let out a deep sigh and I rubbed my face.

"So.. there's a party tonight. You know those back to school parties. And I got invited by a friend and I just wanted to know if I can go." I say slowly and she tilts her head.

"Ok you can go." She says and I pause.

This is definitely not like her.

She didn't ask me any questions, she didn't give me a look, she didn't say anything about me being responsible for anything that happens... she just said yes.

"Really?" I ask

"Yeah you can go. It's a great opportunity for you to make friends here and your father and I need a break from you anyways." She says and I look around.

"Ok.." I say while slowly turning around and running back upstairs.

I was completely shocked but I didn't really dwell on it too long.

I took a shower an hour ago so I could be prepared from beforehand.

I usually take long getting ready so I needed to at least get one thing out of the way.

I started to rummage through my clothes. I wanted to wear a dope ass outfit.

I also needed to do my hair. And doing my hair takes a very long time.

After 30 mins of looking through clothes, I found the dopest outfit and I looked at myself through my bedroom mirror.

I smiled and nodded

I smiled and nodded.

"Girl you look good." I say out loud.

I looked at my clock on my nightstand.

It was currently 9:07pm and I didn't realize how long it took me to get dressed and get my hair done.

I sprayed a little bit of perfume on me and ran out my room.

I ran down the stairs and I noticed my dad looking at me.

"Where are you going?" He asks and I notice my mom turn the corner with quickness.

"She's going to a get together thing with her classmates." My mom says and I look at her in relief because the lord knows I would've struggled.

"Dressed like that?" He furrows his eyebrows and I internally sigh.

"Yes. She's going dressed like that. I don't see a problem with it." My mom says.

"Her whole back is out and the bottom is so tight. It's 1989, it's not like the 70's anymore." My dad exclaims and I look at the living room clock and I noticed that it was now 9:14pm.

"Sorry to cut y'all warm conversation about me but I have to get going." I cut and my dad sighs.

"Be safe." He says, pulling me into a hug.

He pulls away and kisses my forehead.

"Get home before 12:30." My mom says and I nod.

"Yes of course!" I say, grabbing my clutch and running out the front door.

I took out the invitation that was currently inside my clutch and looked at the address.

I realized that I would have to take the bus for like 6 stops and I became annoyed.
