Call him? Now? Who am I kidding, he was joking. Right? My phone-which had managed to get lost in all my blankets-started vibrating.
The bright white of the iMessage was gone and in its place was a dull blue. toe. He wasn't joking. Hovering my shaking thumb over the answer button, to say I was nervous was an understatement.
What if he didn't like me? maybe my voice is too deep for him. I pressed down on the green circle. Now or never I suppose."Cole?" I whispered with a quiver.
He hummed in response.
"What now?" I murmured softly.
"Why are you being so quiet?"
His voice was indescribable. It was raspy as if he hadn't spoken in a while but at the same time, velvety. It pulled you along with it into another world.
"Cole, it's the middle of the night,"
"So?"
"Some of us have thin walls,"
"Shhh"
Just breathe. Don't let him know you're nervous.
"Why are you shushing me, you're the one who's not whispering and then you attack me like that-"
"I mean I wouldn't call that whispering," Cole laughed.
"Shut up," I whispered harshly into the phone.
The footsteps got louder as they neared my room. I pulled my blankets over me and pretended to be asleep in the most believable way.
"Carmen?" Caleb's voice came from next to me.
"Was it you who was talking?" Caleb spoke again.
As realistically as I could, I got up, pretending to be groggy and all.
"Caleb? what happened?"
"I heard you talking."
"wha-"
"I know you're acting Carmen,"
"But I was sleep talking!" I bluffed, trying not to think about Cole.
After one last look at me, Caleb left the room. I snickered at the Mickey Mouse pyjamas he wore before picking up my phone.
"Sleep talking, really? How did you know that you were sleep talking if you were asleep?"
And with that I hung up on him.
