Early Morning
We woke up to the sound of buzzing and the complains coming from Edward. He pulled me out of the sleeping bag and dragged Daniel out by the hairs.
"We're under attack! Hurry, or else-"
Thunder, then silence. I turned to Daniel with a raised eyebrow, but before I could hold him to check he was there, the ground shook.
I had never lived an earthquake, sarcastic considering I was the daughter of the god who makes them, but this felt quite like one. My ears hurt from the loud volume of the explosion, and my eyes from pressing them so much, yet I willed myself into standing up and helping Daniel do so too. As soon as I was on my feet, I tied my hair with itself.
"What was that?" Asked Daniel.
"A plane. And I assigned Mica to stop it," Edward look out from our house, fear in his eyes like I had only seen on Mica's.
The abandoned old place we had taken as refuge during our time in the Netherlands, only used to sleep after fighting mostly monsters, was threatening to crumble over our heads.
"Daniel, let's get out of here," I pulled him out of Edward's grip and exited with only my bow, carcaj, and dagger on me.
The house didn't crumble, but I wouldn't take any risks.
Daniel pulled my shirt's sleeve to ask for Mica. Before he could speak, I pointed in the direction the bomb came from.
Mica's arms were tanned and dirty, her glasses over her head, and her hair a mess, but she stood over unstable rubble with ease. Then the airplanes attacked again. Flying so high above they could have been wasps targeting an attacker, but they were the invaders in another nest.
The daughter of Hephaestus looked up at the airplanes and tightened her grip. She concentrated so hard her eyes started watering and sweat formed in her forehead, but she was not taking any rest.
I wondered what she was trying to archive, that is until I looked up and saw one of those wasps pass down really close to us. I turned and ran away, trying to avoid whatever damage it could do, but it simply let a small distant figure gently falling down behind our house, supported by a white parachute.
Mica relaxed to smile and sigh, the plane that had thrown the thing in a parachute was now slithering down the sky with no control. She had managed to break it down from such a distance, definitely a daughter of Hephaestus. Yet there were dozens more flying around and dropping more white parachutes.
"Kalila, prepare your bow and shoot down everything the airplanes drop, that's an immediate order!"
I didn't quite like the need Mica had to say her words were orders, since I was going to do it even if it was a suggestion because I was just that nice. Yet when she insisted it was an order, the achievement was no longer on my shoulders. I hated that. But, I still did it.
I tensed my bow and took out a few normal arrows as to not waste celestial bronze. The targets flew down faster, only the few I could actually shoot at such a length at least, but they seemed to struggle. Like a bird shot down mid-flight, they moved. I couldn't quite figure what they were, but I was scared to notice they could be people.
"Kalila, look," Daniel caught my attention, pointing behind the house. His hand was clasped around his sword, ready to attack. It scared me how sure he was of an attack, so I used that fear to walk forward.
The shadow of dawn casted moving figures on the back of our house, dancing rhythmically until a dancer went out of the choreography and attacked.
Immediately, I avoided the hit and turned the attacker's weapon against himself. A young man not much older than Mica, but different in the way life had treated him. His face had recent scars and was dirty, as opposed to Mica who had faced hardships yet managed to heal and clean herself. In a way, he reminded me of Daniel's messy self. What highlighted the most from the man, though, was the symbol he wore on his hat. Like four 'L's facing the same direction. I recognized it.
"Daniel! Edward! We have a nazi to kick!"
The man seemed startled to have failed an attack on a child. He instantly unbuckled his broken parachute, using the same movement to take out a gun and point at me. Daniel's would have been useful had we gotten real bullets for mortals.
My brother and Daniel ran to my aid, Daniel wielding his sword and Edward his presence.
The soldier shouted something in a language I couldn't understand, but I could understand his movements. He pointed at all of us with the barrel of his gun, a modern one I had not seen before. I dropped to my knees and raised my hands beside my head to show I had nothing to attack. Edward's stance gave me confidence he would get us out of there alive,
An exchange of foreign words went between the two, making me wonder how did Daniel know the language, but I never questioned it. His tone was relaxed, his hands on his hips, and his green eyes mischievously proud.
I relaxed my legs, sitting over my feet but kept my hands up. Daniel looked at his blade with concern, possibly since celestial bronze would do a mortal nazi no damage. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a blonde figure, and I finally understood we were completely safe.
Daniel started approaching the man, and he defended himself with shaky legs and an even more shaky grip on the gun. Until he pressed the trigger.
No bullet came out. No loud bang I was so used to. Instead, the man looked at his own weapon and gasped for air. He scratched his neck, and took out his tongue. His eyes went dry, his skin pale and thin, his lips shone no more. That was when I saw the puddle of water forming at his feet. Clean shiny water, and brightly staring eyes of my brother,
"The human body is 70% water, Kalila," He looked at me, his hands open but stiff in power. I didn't care if Daniel had a hand on it, or if he became braver at my fear, but I panicked. "You can do things like this."
The man fell to the ground, his tongue almost white, and the puddle around him now taking a reddish tone. The man's pores started bleeding.
"Stop it!" I shouted.
"You don't know what these men have done. You'd do the same, or worse," Edward coughed, apparently a great effort from his part had been used.
Daniel coughed, and I saw him swallow with a disgusted face.
"Ed, come on," Mica walked forth. She clasped her own hands with the same issue as Edward. She had made the gun fail. "There are more attacks going on in the city, the war got here. We shouldn't have another Poland."
"Not another Poland," Edward exhaled and looked at us, "You kids, do your best. And if you see those symbols, you know what to do."
I wanted to vomit. I didn't want to do that. But I nodded to have him go away.
Mica and Edward left sprinting. As soon as they were out of reach, Daniel approached me and pulled me away from the corpse.
"Come on, we have to do something. I'll make them scared, and you'll do that, right?"
"No, Daniel, of course not."
"IT'S US OR THEM, KALILA!" He snapped at the minimum complaint. After realizing, he relaxed his face and dropped his shoulders, "I mean, please. Understand we're actually at war now. No Camp to protect us, and you haven't come this far to give up, haven't you?"
It sounded like Daniel was talking about himself, but I nodded to have him calm down.
