The rest of school is pretty uneventful. Afterwards, Huey invites me over to his place again.
I go next door and knock on the door. He opens it and lets me inside.
"Where are you know who?" I ask him.
He shrugs. "They said they were going to see some friends. Probably doing something they're not supposed to. I'm about to leave too."
"Where are you going?"
"Just going for a walk."
"Oh." My eyes dance a little. "Should I come back another time?"
"You're whiny, but you can come," he remarks.
I roll my eyes. "You're mean."He steps out of the house out the house. Before he closes it, he yells,
"Granddad, I'm leaving!"
"Boy, I'm nappin'! Quit all that damn yellin'!"I giggle lightly. He sighs and closes the door, locking it behind him. Then, we started walking.
"He seemed nicer yesterday," I say.
"He's always nice around new people...especially women."
"Oh, a ladies man?" I chuckle.
"More or less." He wears a small grimace at the thought. "He just signed up for a yoga class just so he can find more dates."
"I see nothing wrong with that. Maybe he's lonely?"
"You don't have to hear him interacting with said dates when he brings them home at night."
My jaw drops slightly, and I don't know whether to laugh. "Ohmigod, ewwwww! I don't even want to picture that!"
"Your parents never gave you the talk, huh, Princess?"
"Stop calling me that!" I push him to the side. "Of course, they did."
"You just had such a strong reaction to what I said."
"Well, have you ever done it, Huey?" I query, looking at him through my peripherals.
He looks away. "Um..."
"Wooow..." My eye's widen with astonishment. His cheeks begin to turn red as I start to laugh.
"I can't even imagine you being nice to a girl!"
"Shut up," he says, nudging me.
"Who was she?"
"You don't know her, and it's none of your business, Jazmine."
I cup my hand over my mouth to calm my chuckles, "OK..."In the distance, we hear loud, thundering vibrations, like a car radio blasting music. Around the corner at the end of the block, a large black Escalade made a sharp turn, skidding in the process. Huey and I slow our walking to watch it speed down the street in our direction with its windows rolled down. In the driver's seat is a white guy with blonde braids, laughing maniacally. In the passenger's seat is another white guy with red hail, laughing as well. As the truck flies by, we see Ruckus with his hands tied behind his back and handing out the backseat window.
"Help, meh, darkies!" he cries to us.
Riley and Cindy are also in the backseat, both looking panicked. Riley screams to the driver,
"Rummy, please, slow down!"
Huey and I stop in our tracks in shock, watching as the truck flies off into the distance.
"I gotta go," he says quickly before he takes off back to our houses.
"Huey, wait!" I call for him, running behind him.
"Go home! I don't wanna put you in danger!" he says.He stops when we're back in his driveway.
"I wanna help," I say.
"No, Jazmine." He unlocks his car.
"Huey, what if something happens to you?"
He looks at me in contemplation, then he sighs and gets in.
"C'mon," he says.Without losing a second, I hop in the passenger's seat. He quickly backs out of the driveway, then darts off in the direction of the truck.
