Year 3011

"Fifteen. Such a proud day, Luke." said his father, smiling stiffly.

"Yes, first day at work." agreed his mother, the same stiff expression on her face. "A proud moment."

"Hmm." nodded Luke, half heartedly, he was internally figuring out a way to hide any differences that might show through. Lately, he'd been showing external signs that he was 'different'. He harvested the crops a lot faster than anyone else and had to purposefully slow himself down before anyone could notice, because everyone harvests at the same speed so no one is 'better' than anyone else.

Luke would have to learn to work at everyone else's speed, slower, but not too slow.

The first day was hard.

It's knowing you're not performing to your full potential in an effort to be normal. At one point, before Equality, he would of been encouraged, told to push himself, instead Luke found himself having to harvest at everyone around him's speed, that's hard because it's not natural, watching someone else work and copying them to perfection.

Luke was worn out, maybe once he got the right momentum going he would be fine but until then, the struggle was tough.

And, it was only the first day.

He was right, after a few weeks, Luke got it. He memorized the speed. And so far, no one had noticed. Just another 80 years of holding back and then it would be over.

Year 3014

After 3 years of work, the Harvesters had their final pinnacle moment. They held a ceremony in which each 18 year old took the final Oath (To work for the rest of their lives, therefore serving their World) and moved from Minor to Worker.

It was three days before said ceremony.

Luke, being more aware, had always noticed how when kids left school they still looked young but when seen again in a few years time they seemed to have aged decades.

He stared into the reflection of the glass in window. He could see it in himself, dark blue indigo circles lay heavy under his bright blue eyes.

If I stay here, those eyes will only fade to washed out nothing. He thought. Those circles will only get worse. Don't you want to leave? If you're different then you're not meant to be here.

"Maybe I should leave." He whispered aloud. "There's got to be a way out."

That night he fell asleep dreaming of a way out. A way to leave the Community, a way to escape.

He awoke with an unfamiliar name on his lips and a face he'd never seen before inches before his.
