Flashback: New Years 2016
Texas: Lucas's Grandparents.

The night was one that I often thought about. The Millers always had big barbecues on New Years Eve. Lucas had arrived for Christmas break and we barely spent any time together.

When I saw him drinking lemonade with Maybelline my heart froze. The butterflies I felt two summers ago had returned. The day Lucas kissed me after walking me back home from our goodbye movie scene.

I didn't exactly know how to act around him anymore. Roddi says I'm just being paranoid about the kiss. As if Zay bet him to do it or if he only did it to get Kristen Smith's attention.

I was debating on going home with he made his way over to me and shot me a movie star smile. I blushed. "Hi Cowboy." I spoke quietly as if it was telling a him a secret.

"Hey giggles." He said back. He frowned. "What's wrong?" He asked. I guess I wasn't smiling as I thought I was. "I haven't seen you much.." I sigh taking a seat in one of the lawn chairs. Lucas looks around for a moment then takes my hand.

"Where's your brother?" He whispered scanning the crowd once again. I shrugged. "None of my business."

I stand up and Lucas pulls me close. "Do you wanna get out of here?" He asked. I thought he never would.

We ended up going back to his grandparents house and watched the New Years Eve show on TV.

"Is New York everything you dreamed it would be?" I asked. I know he has a few friends there. They even came to visit once. Such pretty people.

"It would be better if I had you around." His voice trailed off.

We are laying stomachs down on his bed facing the tv screen. Do I wish Lucas never moved away? Yeah. Do I appreciate our time together more than I use to? You betcha.

"How's your girlfriend?" I ask remember how Grandpa Friar spoke about an argument going on between Lucas and one of the girls.

He scuffed then faces me. "I dunno, how are you Ponygirl?" He asks with a smirk on his face.

I glare. "I'm fine cowboy." I mumble back. Lucas sighs. "What's wrong?"

"Those city girls.. one has to be your girlfriend." I snap. The way Zay spoke about the fights on the phone, it seemed pretty serious.

"Lydia." Lucas started and I smacked him on the back. He groaned. Nobody calls me by my middle name.. not ever. Not even my Mom.

"You're gonna regret that." He said with a smirk. I shrug "Am I?" I asked with a teasing smile.

I rolled onto my back as Lucas placed his arms on either side of me. He smirked down at me as I smirked up at him.

"I think you should apologize." He teased. Something he's obviously forgotten. I play dirty. Stubbornness is my specialty.

"Make me." I muttered before getting a fuzzy feeling in my stomach as our lips met once again.

Present day

The sound of the subway pulling up snapped me out of a distant memory.

"Nothing too important." I told Josh. It wasn't lying, I just wasn't ready to tell him yet.

I wasn't ready to tell him that Lucas was my everything. My best friend. My first kiss. My first image of a boyfriend.. my first time..

Telling Josh that Lucas has had a major impact on my life would ruin everything. Including how often we use to sneak around with one another. Except that one year he was with Maya.. and that one with Riley.. I wasn't ready for our date to end before it's even started..

"He's just someone who is.. was.. special to me."
