Steve's POV
"Hey Steve?" Tom asks for the millionth time, tapping me gently on the shoulder. Are all actors this curious and relentless? Or have I just been cursed?
I finish putting my sunglasses on before I glance over at him, tightening my grip on the steeling wheel, "Yes, Tom?" I grit my teeth together, sighing in annoyance. He's a nice guy, I'm not saying otherwise, he just keeps asking questions I don't feel like answering at the moment. This was me when I was his age, following Bucky around like the lost puppy I was.
He shifts in his seat, showing me something on his phone when we stop at a red light. It's a photoshopped picture of Bucky and I—woah, oh my god, I didn't need to see that. "Is this accurate?" He asks, straight faced, looking from the phone to my face, then shaking his head in confusion when I grab the phone and toss it into the floor at his feet. "Hey! I just got that phone!"
My cheeks feel hot, I exhale a breath, loosening my grip on the wheel,"Don't show me things like that! What's wrong with you? I'm driving!"
"I was just asking!"
"Can I see?" Thor asks, chiming in from the backseat. He just stopped complaining about not having enough leg room thirty minutes ago, started staring out the window and mumbling incoherently to himself when I told him to shut up. I hit his head, he grumbles, "What was that for?"
"Being an idiot. You can't see the picture," The light turns green.
Tom wipes his phone off on his pants, then unlocks the device, showing the picture to Thor, who giggles. Oh my god. Thor grabs the phone, grinning like a mad man as Tom laughs with him, "Hold on, I got more," Tom tells him, swiping on his phone. He has them saved?? What the fuck? They continue this for about five miles, until Tom eventually runs out of photos. Thank God.
I flip the radio on, letting Sebastian's favorite station fill the car. I smile, remembering all those times he'd jam out, drumming his hands along the wheel, singing into his phone when we stopped at a red light, ordering me to join even if I didn't know the song. I miss that. I miss him. "Steve?"
"Yeah, Seb—Thor?" I shake my head, snapping out of my daydream, looking back at Thor through the mirror. He frowns. He misses him too.
He yawns, throwing his head back on the headrest and then using his sweater sleeve to rub at his eyes,"Can we go get something to eat? I'm starving,"
"Me too. I'll pay!" Tom blurts out before I get the chance to speak. Fine. Whatever. Isn't like we're in a hurry or anything. Let's get food, eat some french fries while we watch the world burn, sounds lovely.
I take the next exit, spotting a sign that lists some fast food restaurants. "We have to be quick about it," I tell them sternly, turning the volume down on the radio as a sad song starts playing. My life is already sad enough. We pull into the parking lot, Thor's excitement building as I switch the car off. This man only gets excited about a handful of things: Television, Fighting, Jane, Discovering Loki isn't actually dead, and Food. He's like an overexcited dog. Dodger basically, Thor is Dodger.
"Fifteen minutes tops," Tom promises as he opens his door. We all get out. I check my watch, ready to start timing this. Fifteen minutes. Okay. That should be fine.
The place isn't packed, so maybe we won't get mobbed this time. Last time Sebastian and I tried to dine in, I lost a shoe. Teenage boys are vicious. We head inside, Thor holding the door open for me, practically shaking from excitement. "Would you calm down? People are going to assume you're a junkie,"
"What's a junkie?" He whispers, blue eyes innocently gleaming. I pull him along to the front counter by his arm.
"Just order your food, Chris." I pat his shoulder as a young girl eating at a table with her parents makes eye contact with me, sidestepping away as Tom walks up, standing between us. The young woman behind the counter stares at us wide eyed, acting as though she doesn't know which one of us to put her eyes on. Awh, bless her.
Tom breaks the awkward silence, already pulling his wallet from his pocket, "Hi darling, I'll take a number five." He flashes her a smile before turning to us, "What do you guys want?"
Thor places his hands to the surface of the counter, intensely eyeing the digital menu, while the woman eyes him. She even looks him up and down, not at all ashamed to do it either. Damn."A number 3, go large. Side order of pickles, extra mayonnaise, and a large chocolate milk,"
She puts it all in, but then freezes, raising her brows and then knitting them together, "Do you mean chocolate milkshake?"
Thor shakes his head, visibly offended by her words, "No, miss, chocolate milk. With a swirly straw preferably,"
I pull him back, he yelps. "Sorry, he's been working all week, he's having a bit of an actor meltdown." I apologize on his behalf, kicking his leg as he pinches my arm. I chuckle, still smiling at the girl, "I'll just take a salad, no dressing,"
She gives Tom the total while I grab Thor by the arm and force him to sit down with me at a booth in the back corner of the restaurant, as far away from people as we can possibly get. He's still all smiles, looking around the nicely Christmas decorated restaurant with wonder in his eyes. He really likes it here, even though he doesn't have his abilities. He's so carefree. I play with a napkin I find laying on the table, "Thor? Can I ask you something?"
His eyes fly to me. His smile drops when he sees my face. "Of course you can, friend. What's on your mind?"
I sigh, placing my hands together on the table. I finally remove my sunglasses, placing them on the table. I feel restless, can't be still, can't think. My mind feels jumbled. I'm forgetting things recently, things about my life. Things I shouldn't be forgetting. "Are you happy here? In this world? You've just been acting so different since you got here,"
He goes right back to smiling, "It's nice here, yeah," He hums, moving his eyes to the window behind me, "I like it here,"
He doesn't appear to have a care in the world. He's completely at ease. I wish I could relate. "Don't you miss your powers? And the team? And.. Jane?"
His eyes move back to my face, his shoulders shrug, "Well, yeah. But I know everything is gonna be okay, I'm just enjoying my time away,"
