CHAPTER NINE
hand holding"he's gonna be okay, right channie hyung?" namjoon mumbled, glossy eyes focused on a small black dot on the floor. while one hand covered his mouth in an attempt to keep the bile from rising up his throat, the other twisted the button on the sleeve of his shirt until it couldn't turn any further, then spun it back the other way.
chan glanced at him from the corner of his eye. "yeah. he'll be fine."
chan ignored the glares that came from both wonho and jackson. he knew there was no way to tell if jooheon really would be okay. he knew there was a chance that jooheon might not survive, even with the best doctors in the country doing everything they can to save him. but he couldn't stand to see namjoon hurting.
namjoon finally looked away from the black dot when a can of cold coffee was held out to him. he looked up to find seokjin, smiling softly down at him.
namjoon took the coffee from jin with a small thank you, swallowing the thick lump in his throat. with a nod, jin sat down across from him with the other members of the elite team.
namjoon popped open the can. "how is... um, how's jungkook-ssi?"
jin's gaze flicked up from his gas-station egg sandwich, eyes wide; he wasn't expecting namjoon to ask him about jungkook when he was so worked up about jooheon. "he's doing alright... they had to remove a bullet from his shoulder and his left arm is broken, but otherwise he'll be fine. the doctor said that they want to keep him overnight to make sure everything's still good, but he can come home tomorrow."
everyone seemed to deflate a bit at his words. at least one of them was going to be fine.
namjoon turned his head to the side to find wonho plopping down beside him with a heavy sigh. his eyes were red and swollen, and namjoon's heart ached.
jooheon and wonho were close, the pair having trained together from a very young age. though the five of them — namjoon and his guards — were all practically brothers, jooheon and wonho seemed to have the closest bond out of all of them.
namjoon reached over and grabbed the friendly giant's hand, squeezing it tight. wonho squeezed it in return, lifting their joined hands to his chin.
neither had to say a word. they knew the other was there for them by simply holding each other's hand.
that was also the moment when the elite team realized just how close namjoon and his body guards were. there was no separating them. even when namjoon officially joined their team when he turned eighteen, there would be no "removal of the guards" like they had originally planned. they'd have to deal with the (hopefully?) four of them for the rest of their short lives.
and they were a little less than happy about that.
⌲
five hours later.
namjoon had long since fallen asleep on wonho's shoulder, wonho dozing on top of namjoon's head. chan snored sofly as he leaned on namjoon, and jackson yawned with resting eyes, head on wonho's other shoulder. the elite team were in particular positions, except seokjin and hoseok were still wide awake, playing a game of cup pong on their phones.
when a doctor cleared his throat, all seven boys who feel asleep jolted awake, shouting all types of profanities, pulling guns and knives, and suddenly more alert than they were before they fell asleep.
the doctor nearly pissed his pants, hands thrown up in the air in surrender until everyone realized where they were and that they weren't being attacked.
namjoon was the first to scramble to his feet and rush over to the doctor, frantically asking; "how is he?"
the doctor let out an exasperated sigh, eyes blinking rapidly — he wasn't expecting to have a heart attack when he came to tell them the news. "well, first things first — he's in stable condition. ribs three through five on his left side are broken, and rib four on his right side snapped and punctured his lung — which has since reinflated. you'll have to be careful with him however, otherwise he could repuncture it. now, i have some good news and bad news; which would you like first?"
namjoon looked over his shoulder at wonho, who was quick to follow behind namjoon and find out jooheon's condition. chan and jackson stood a few feet behind them, and the elite team even further behind them. everyone waited for the pair to decide with bated breath.
namjoon and wonho made brief eye contact before wonho turned back to the doctor. "good news."
the doctor nodded. "he's conscious and can see you one at a time. any more than one of you and he may get too overwhelmed."
"and the bad news?"
"... lee jooheon has suffered from a spinal cord injury; he's paralyzed from the waist down."
