Lightness
The person behind the voice stood there half concealed in the darkness, and the other half vibrant under the moonlight.
"I heard you scream, are you okay?" Her voice carried hints of concern.
"I thought I saw someone," I turned back to the spot where, I thought, I saw a face looking back at me but there was nothing there to prove any paranormal activity had occurred.
"You must have seen Daisy."
My eyes met hers. "Do you really believe that?" I shuddered. She slumped forward. "I'm not sure, but the others seem too. I haven't seen her myself. But life works in weird ways, doesn't it?"
"Yes, I guess it does," before I could stop myself, my eyes were examining every inch of the girl that stood in front of me. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
"I don't think so." She eyed me curiously.
But I thought so. A small hint of Deja Vu crawled up my skin. Those eyes seemed so familiar. Like I've stared at them a thousand times over. I couldn't help but stare deep into those blue speckles trying to recall where I've seen them before. I was so focused on her eyes, I hadn't noticed the lingering silence.
she broke the silence, by introducing herself, "Nice to meet you, I'm Delphi."
I shook her extended hand. "I'm Amira," I said, but my insides were screaming. If I could put the hollering into words, they would say, don't you remember me?
"You must be new. I haven't been here for a while."
"Yes. I just started a few days ago." I cleared my throat and tried desperately to stop staring, "I uh, I'm here to harvest the pumpkins."
"Oh wonderful!" She clapped her hands together. "It's that time again! Soon before you know it, we'll be having our annual tree farm." Her face beamed, "I'll come help you, but first let's find Stormi."
She began to walk before me and as I watched her back turn, the same sense of deja vu gnawed at me. But where have I seen her before? "So are you sure I haven't seen you before?" I asked again.
She turned around, "Well possibly, but I don't really recall seeing you anywhere." She searched my face in hopes of recognizing something.
"School?" I went on.
"Oh I'm homeschooled."
"Do you work anywhere?"
"Nope." Failure. I followed her into the flower dome. She opened her backpack and pulled out a bowl and a can of cat food.
I eyed her quizzingly, "um what's that for?"
"For Stormi."
"Who's Stormi?"
"Our cat."
"We have a cat here?"
"You didn't know? Oh, I hope Zelma's been remembering to feed him." She worried.
"I couldn't tell you." and as if on command, a beautiful black cat came crawling out from underneath one of the tables.
"He likes to chew on the wires."
"OH!" I gasped. "Well that explains a lot."
She laughed, "Yea but don't tell Zelma that."
"So we're still going to stick with the Daisy story."
