Max led me out of the little cafe we'd ate lunch at and slung his arm over my shoulder rubbing it gently. Max made me feel safe, that was a huge task that's this mere human had fulfilled."Max, did you know in hell humans are talked down on."
Max did a dramatic double take.
"Noooo."
I nodded my head and smirked.
"Well what are they saying about my species?!"
There was a clear playfulness to his tone that made his miss matched eyes shine.
"They say humans are weak and have no purpose."
Max laughed loudly and pulled me to him.
"So not true!"
I laughed with Max.
"We humans have to maintain normalcy."
I smacked my lips playfully and slapped his chest with a bubbly laugh.
"That's the dumbest thing I've heard today!"
Max picked me up and spun in a circle with me in his arms. Just as I was opening my eyes with laughter I caught sight of a man staring at us from across the little street in the plaza. It was Vex! Glaring and looking ready to strike. A gasp escaped my mouth as I turned and pulled Max with me.
"What's wrong?"
Tears prickled at my eyes my breathing turned strained.
"Fuck, just run Max!"
Max ran with me to the car.
As if sensing the urgency Max stayed quiet and drove off quickly.
"When I was portled into the human world I made a deal with the realm traveler warlock, he'd send me to the human world if I gave him this ancient spell book that's been passed down to me from my moms great, great, great grandmother."
I paused and took a much needed breath.
"Why didn't you give him the book?"
My eyes frantically searched the back window and front for any signs of the warlock.
"Because it's a guid on how to create more creatures, it's not safe in the wrong hands and trust me their bad guys that's why the incubuies were protecting it, nobody would look for the book if a down ruler had it!"
Max made a O shape with his mouth.
"So, Vex found me and he's coming to either bring me back to hell And take the book or he's planning to kill me after I hand him the book!"
Max turned his head to e sharply a look on his face as he grabbed my hand.
"I won't let him hurt you!"
I swapped at some stray tears and squeezed his hand in my own.
"I can't go back to Hell or they'll kill me!"
I sobbed and tried to hang on to my wits.
"I promise nobody will take you from me Gabrial!"
Max's voice held authority and confidence.
"I'll protect you."
Max parked in the driveway quickly and got me inside of the house.
"What do we do to keep Vex away from the house?"
I sniffed and tried to think.
"I- I don't know!"
I gasped and ran up the flight of stairs and into Max's closet moving the stack of clothes to grab the sheep skin leather book.
Once I found it I sat on the bed and flipped through the pages.
"Are you looking for a spell?"
Max sat beside me his arms over my waist immediately.
"It's useless because I don't have any elements of magic to cast anything!"
Max held me as I whispered against his chest.
"Well, he doesn't know where we live."
Exasperated I stood up.
"Max, he can find me easily now!"
Max looked confused.
"But how?"
My hands dragged down my face. This was useless he's a human.
"He's a half warlock all he has to do now is track me with magic and he can find me it's only a matter of time before he comes for this stupid fucking book!"
Max stood up panic now present in his features.
"Do you know anyone with magic here who could help hide you?!"
A frustrating scream welled from my throat.
"No, I fucking don't I've never known anyone who'd made it to earth!"
Max gripped my shoulders and held me close to his chest as he petted my hair trying to hold back tears as his eyes glossed over.
"I- I have a gun."
Max let go of my hand and ran to the bedside table opening it up and pulling out a heavy looking weapon.
"I can kill him."
I ran to max and held onto him for dear life.
"Okay."
Max seemed a bit surprised.
"All I have to do is shoot him in a fatal place and he'll die?"
I don't know I hope!
"Max I don't know I never studied warlocks but I think so, they should be vulnerable just like a human when wounds are inflected. All they are is humans with magic elements and realm hoppers."
With a mission sat ahead Max began loading the bullets.
The sheep skin book was in my tight grasp while I watched Max with anticipation.
"Gabe don't worry, I'll protect you if it's the last thing I fucking do."
Nodding my head Max sat on the bed with me on his lap as he held me tightly after shutting and locking the bedroom door.
"Max, whatever happens they can not have this book."
Max agreed.
"And they certainly won't get it."
