“She’s breathing,” Nina said.
Edward was relieved to hear that she was alive. Daniel came over to me and wrapped his arms around my waist. I lay my head on his chest.
After about an hour we had already started a fire and eaten dinner. I lay down on the cold, soft grass.
I couldn’t sleep. There was something I wanted to do. Something I needed to do. I sat up and looked around. Everyone was sleeping. I thought of waking Daniel up, but I pushed the thought aside. I lay down. I planned what I was going to say to him in my head over and over again.
The time came when I couldn’t wait anymore. I stood up and gently shook Daniel’s shoulder.
“Daniel?” I whispered. He looked at me sleepily.
“What’s up?” he asked quietly.
“Can we talk?” I asked. His face became serious. He nodded. I helped him up. We walked somewhere private.
“What’s up?” he asked. He smiled at me. His hazel eyes glimmered. His dark, sandy coloured hair was messy. I felt guilty for having to do this. But I needed to. I decided to get straight to the point.
“We need to break up,” I said. His expression showed a little pain, then seriousness.
“Okay,” he said casually, like this was an everyday conversation. I was surprised.
“No questions? No arguments? You’re going to let me go, just like that?”
“Well, cry me a river. One more time though, okay?” I wasn’t so sure where this was going.
“One more time?” I repeated. He nodded. He quickly pressed his lips against mine, then walked away. I saw him lie down on the grass and close his eyes.
It took some time for my brain to proccess what had just happened. I broke up with him, then he kissed me? Where’s the logic in that?
I walked back to where I had tried to sleep, then tried to sleep again.
I fell asleep thinking about Victor.
