Chapter 27: Darling Jane

Teresa sprinted towards the woman bleeding heavily on the ground, not caring if she get burnt from the fire surrounding the orphanage. Warren sprinted along with Teresa but was ahead of her and when he was close enough to the fire, he started to flap his massive wings towards the fire. A great wind appeared due to Warren's wings and it managed to leave an opening for Teresa to go through unharmed.

Teresa's suspicions on who the woman was were correct when she went to approach her. Teresa knelt down to Miss Jane and pulled Miss Jane to her lap.

"What happened here?" Was the first thing Teresa asked Miss Jane, leaning down to the woman's ear so that she could hear Teresa clearly. Miss Jane had many injuries but out of all of them, the worst one was the wound in her stomach. It looked to be a stab wound and blood was pouring out of the wound fast. Miss Jane was trying to stop the blood from coming out by ripping a part of her dress and pressing it onto the wound.

However, Miss Jane could barely stay conscious and was quietly gasping for air, most likely due to the smoke surrounding her and the great pain she was feeling in her stomach. She grabbed onto Teresa's right shoulder for support as Teresa took the ripped cloth from Miss Jane's hand and put pressure on the wound like Miss Jane was doing.

Just as Warren finished stopping the fire, he went inside the orphanage that was thankfully not caught on fire, but he instead found a different problem. "The kids aren't here!" He shouted to Teresa after he had checked every single room and corner of the orphanage, and went outside. The two young mutants thought the worst thing had happened and that perhaps they had been taken by someone but it changed when Miss Jane weakly pointed to the forest near the orphanage.

"The kids.. are there," Miss Jane tried to sit up to point at the direction of the children better but she fell back down. However, Teresa held a tight grip on her waist with her other hand that wasn't putting pressure on Miss Jane's wound and prevented her from falling to the ground.Warren wasted no time in going to the direction Miss Jane had pointed to, leaving Teresa alone with her.

Miss Jane started coughing violently and Teresa stopped what she was doing to look up at Miss Jane. She returned her gaze to the wound in Miss Jane's stomach and moved her fingers in front of it, causing blue wisps to come out, as Teresa attempted to heal Miss Jane.

Miss Jane let out a breath of relief when she felt the pain decrease. She let herself rest as much as she could in the situation she was in since she had used up all her efforts in staying alive from the smoke and the unbearable pain. Although most of Miss Jane's minor injuries disappeared due to Teresa's power a few moments after she had started, the wound in Miss Jane's stomach only kept pouring out blood and Miss Jane was beginning to feel dizzy from the lack of blood in her body. Teresa furrowed her eyebrows as she moved her fingers around more, causing the blue wisps to increase and more of it surround the wound then. However, all her efforts were in vain when Teresa took another look at the wound and it seemed to only get worse with her attempts.

As Teresa continued to try and heal Miss Jane, a terrified look slowly appeared on Teresa's face when she realized that for some reasons, she was unable to heal Miss Jane, even while she was using the best of her healing abilities. "I can't-" Teresa swallowed hard, her eyes were filled with tears, but she refused to let any of them drop from her eyes and continued on with her efforts. Although Miss Jane was unable to focus clearly on Teresa since her dizziness has gotten worse, she knew what Teresa was trying to say by hearing the tone and emotion in her voice. Miss Jane didn't say anything but she patted Teresa's shoulder twice with the hand she was using to hold onto her, catching Teresa's attention.
