Kanata-san was in a dark blue yukata with little or no pattern on it, just like everyone else in the pleasure quarters. He had his bangs combed to the back neatly. His forehead was exposed, making him seem a lot younger than he should be, and he kept a smile plastered on his face the entire time I stared at him.
"Mafuyu-san, you'll catch a cold if we don't get you out of that yukata," Kanata-san said gently, his smile was small and polite.
Everything was all hidden behind his smile, and it was as if he was a whole new person.
"Shima-kun, you mentioned that Kanata-san was new here," I ignored Kanata-san and looked at Shima-kun instead. "When did he start working?"
"It was just a couple of moments ago before you came in," Shima-kun opened his folded fan to hide his face behind it. "It's amazing how he manages to catch up with how we do things here, so I decided to let him handle one of the courtesans. And then you came in at the perfect timing,"
How could this be possible? This was not according to plan.
"Mafu-kun, I wouldn't want you to catch a cold on your first day at work. I paid quite a number for you," Shima-kun sighed before he turned to Kanata-san. "I want him squeaky clean and put him into one of the kimonos in the changing room. Do not disappoint me, Kanata-san,"
"Understood, Shima-san," Kanata-san responded before he looked back at me. "Shall we, Mafuyu-san?"
I clenched my fists tightly by my sides.
"Please take care of me," I nodded carefully but didn't take his hand.
Kanata-san seemed to have noticed my behaviour and took a step back, away from me and put his hand away before he bowed and led the way.
He walked in front of me, and I followed. Not once did he turn to look back at me. Not once did he stop to talk to me.
And not once did I move my gaze away from his back.
A couple of other attendants were walking pass us, some of them greeting Kanata-san as if they had already been working together for a long time, and then giving me a small nod as an acknowledgment for my presence before they left to continue attending to other courtesans.
Kanata-san stopped at his feet when he got to a door that seemed to be the bath area. He then knocked at the door first, checking if there was anyone using it. He then slid the door open slightly before he turned to look at me.
"Mafuyu-san, I'll go check if there are any courtesans using. Please give me a moment," he said before he walked into the room, leaving me alone out here but he came back to me almost immediately. "It would seem that there isn't anyone inside. Please come in,"
I nodded and walked into the bath area after Kanata-san. Kanata-san instantly closed the door shut and locked it. Before I could turn around to confront him, he quickly wrapped me in a towel and hugged me from behind.
"... Mafumafu, you're cold all over," he said quietly as he helped rub my hands in his, sharing his warmth with me.
"Soraru-san-" I flinched when he hugged me a little too tightly. "Please let go of me, Soraru-san-"
"Just a little while longer, Mafumafu," Soraru-san said as he buried his face into my neck. I could feel his warm breath against my skin, sending tingles down my back. He repeated, "... Just a little while longer,"
"You can't. Your yukata is going to get wet, Soraru-san," Even though I said that, I made no effort to push him away. "And someone might come in,"
Soraru-san then pushed himself away from me. He was obviously hesitant when he still held my hand in his before he slowly forced himself to let go.
"Let's get you into the bath," Soraru-san said as he went back to doing 'Kanata-san's' work, making me turn to face him.
He looked so different with his hair combed back like this. It made him look so cool that my heart squeezed a little when I first saw him because I had never seen a Soraru-san like this before. But that didn't mean it could keep his curly hair down though. It still curled in unimaginable directions, like always.
"... Soraru-san?" I called out as I let him do his job as my attendant.
Soraru-san did not give me a response, but I knew he was listening.
"Why are you here?"
"I couldn't let you do all this alone,"
I blinked a couple of times at his honesty. He would usually try to beat around the bush when we were in this kind of situation, not wanting me to know his true intentions, but he caught me off guard since I wasn't expecting to get an answer out of him this quickly.
"You'll get into danger," I said quietly as he pulled at my obi to loosen my yukata.
"As long as I could keep you safe," he said with a stern tone, throwing the obi on the floor before moving to pull at my collar. "I would do anything for you,"
"I don't need you to do this for me," I stared into his eyes as I said that. He did the same while taking my yukata off for me. He wasn't happy to hear that, but I wasn't happy to see him here either. "You are a man of many responsibilities, the head of the clan, a leader to many men,"
Soraru-san then stepped forward, slamming his hand on the wall behind me, just right next to my head as he cornered me into the wall. I was worried for a second there that the people outside would hear us just from that slam, but it would seem that he wasn't. He leaned in, his eyes filled with fury as he glared at me.
"And I am also yours; your love and your partner," he said before he finally got me out of the yukata and carried me up in his arms. "If I couldn't even protect you, I don't think I'm a man fit to lead the clan,"
I wasn't thinking straight when I wrapped my legs around him on reflex but I placed my hands on his shoulders to push myself away from him, refusing to give in to his words, no matter how sweet they were, no matter how much he touched my heart. I bit onto my lower lip and puffed up my cheeks to show him my dissatisfaction when he placed his hands on my bottom, and he only frowned up at me to show his.
"... You're going to be found out easily, Soraru-san," I said when he placed me on a stool and turned away to look for the soap and cloth.
"Why? Because I'm the head?" he asked, coming back to me with the things he needed, including a wooden bath bucket filled with warm water. "I'm going to pour this over you, close your eyes,"
I did as I was told, and I could feel my body warm up a bit thanks to the warm water Soraru-san brought me. I looked back at him, and he knew what I was asking for without even asking. He went and retrieved more warm water to warm me up.
