"how's it going in there?" her voice rang around the bathroom. behind her, alanna sat silently in a bathroom stall.
"it's not showing up, yet," she replied after a moment.
the dingy yellow light of the dorm bathroom seemed to add to the weight of the air as the two waited. the allegro of their hearts intertwined itself with the silence, the paradoxical culmination of nothing and too much echoing around the room. it lasted only moments, though. in the mirror, she watched as alanna emerged from the stall, staring at the white stick in her hands. she looked up at her and, for a second, both girls simply stared at each other in the mirror before speaking.
"what does it-"
"i'm not pregnant."
