The New Girl Part 2

Hey People, just before I get on with the second part of this fanfiction, I know in the first chapter I used POV writing for Milly but I have decided not POV writing going forward in this story.

A/N: Thoughts in Italics

The journey back to the police station started rather awkwardly. Charlie, for a reason he couldn't comprehend, found himself nervous to talk to her, he wasn't sure what to say. 'She's was quite pretty. Beautiful even.' He blushed at the thought, he hoped she hadn't noticed. He didn't want to make her uncomfortable. After a few minutes in awkward silence, he finally spoke, well stuttered.

"S-s-so do you have a place of your own that you'll be moving into around here or are you staying with family?"

If she had noticed the stutter, she didn't say anything. "I haven't got any family around here, they're all back home in Suffolk, that's where I'm from originally. I move to London when I started my police training. But yeah, I've have got a place sorted, not far from the police station, but I can't move in till Monday so I'm saying in a hotel for the weekend. What about you, you got your own place?" Milly asked.

"No, I only started working here a just before Christmas, I was staying in a hotel until I moved in with Kate on Christmas eve. Like you, I lived and worked in London until I transferred here. I'm surprised we've never met before now."

'Oh no, he got a girlfriend! Damn it!' Milly thought.

Trying not to look too disappointed, she tried to focus on the London part. "Oh, I didn't realise you we're from London. So you're new here too. How you finding it transferring from the city to the countryside."

"It was different, I'm getting used to the quiet and the fact that news seems to travel fast in small villages." They fall into a more comfortable silence for a minute or two, as they draw closer to the station before Milly pried into the latter half of Charlie's previous statement.

"So Kate is she your girlfriend or..?"

Surprised at what she asked, Charlie burst into a coughing fit, nearly choked on his own saliva. "Oh no, no, no! God no! She's a work colleague and my landlady. Sort of." Milly laughed at his reaction, she saw the blush this time.

"Sort of. How can she sort of be your landlady?"

"Kate is Causton's resident forensic pathologist. Dr Kate Wilding. You'll meet her at some point. I was meant to spend Christmas day at the hotel I was staying at but, Christmas eve before I left work Kate offered me her spare room in exchange for rent and cleaning. You know, for a forensic pathologist, her house is really messy" He explained rather annoyed.

"Oh right okay." She laughed to herself at that comment.

'Right so he's single and a neat freak!' 

At that, they pulled up outside the station.

It was one of those rare days in Barnaby's job when he spent most of the day catching up on paperwork, and that's what he was doing when Nelson returned to the office, their new detective in tow.

Barnaby got up to greet her. "Detective Lockley, welcome to Midsomer, it's nice to meet you. I'm DCI John Barnaby and you've already meet DS Nelson. We look forward to working with you."

"A pleasure to meet you, Sir. I look forward to it as well." Amelia greeted back just as formally.

"Good, but I'm afraid you've arrived on one of our quiet days when there's not much to be done except paperwork. So once you've set up your desk, if Nelson is happy too," turning to Charlie, he continues, "he can take you wherever you're staying." Looking to Nelson for an answer.

Charlie nods in confirmation. 

"Yeah, sure."

"Right, well go on then. I've got paperwork to get on with." They both turned to there desk when Barnaby spoke up again. 

"Oh and Lockley!" Waiting for her to turn back before continuing. 

"My wife, would like to meet you, so has asked me too invited you round later for dinner? Nelson and Dr Wilding our resident forensic pathologist will be there too." He waited for an answer.

"Yeah, of course, that would be lovely. Thank you" Amelia smiles, quite surprised to have been asked by her new boss. She turned to her new desk, which faced Charlie's, to quickly set up some personal photo's on her desk before turning to leave.

Later that evening Milly arrived at Barnaby's house, having got a lift with Charlie. She knocked and waited. Barnaby opened the door and welcomed them in when his wife came forward to introduce herself.

"Hi, I'm Sarah, John's wife. You must be Amelia it's lovely to meet."

"Yes, Amelia Lockley, but please call me Milly. It's nice to meet you as well. Barnaby never mentioned you were having a baby. Congratulations!" Milly returned with a smile.

"Thank you. No, he never mentioned it to Charlie either. Strange isn't it." Sarah turned her husband giving him an annoyed look.

"Have you got family your staying with or have you a place of your own?" Sarah asked in a rather concerned motherly tone.

"I'm staying at a hotel until I move into my new place on Monday," Milly assured her.

Kate then interrupted to introduce herself.

"Nice meet you, Milly, I'm Kate, I'm..." before Kate could finish, Milly finished for her.

"The resident forensic pathologist at Causton CID. Yes, it's nice to put a name to a face. Charlie's already mentioned you. You're the landlady too."

"Yes, I am the landlady. Has he been complaining about my messy house already." Kate playfully glared at him.

Laughing she replied. "He might have mentioned it."

Kate laughed back. "I like her already."

Charlie blushed at the teasing and glared back at Kate. He knew he was being ganged up on so stayed silent, he wouldn't win this battle.

In the other room, Sarah and Barnaby observed the interaction between the three younger adults.

"What do you think of our new detective then?" Barnaby asked his wife.

"She's lovely and very pretty. I think Charlie has a crush on her."

"Oh. What makes you say that?" He turns to look at the DS.

"Look at him. He's blushing, can't take his eyes off her and has hardly said a word since he got here. Our DS is in love." Sarah explained and turned back to the cooking.

Sorry if the first two chapters are a bit slow, the next few chapters will move a bit quicker.
