Going through the front door, I'm greeted by the cold winter air. My breath creates small clouds in the sky while I march my way through the crunchy snow.
Once at school though, the classes went great. I could pay attention to the lessons for the first time in months. I was so used to falling asleep on my desk, waking up with a paper stuck to my cheek, that I forgot what it was like. My teacher knows the short story of my situation and was very impressed that I didn't nod off in class. I could finally make my notes as well, instead of copying them from others. Even though I felt great... my classmates were more weirded out by my sudden change. Then again, when I tried to explain to them why I fell asleep in class, they didn't even make an effort to understand me.
An amazing day at school flew by quick. The bell tolls through the building and the class runs empty. I too pack my things and head back out into the white wonderland.
Outside, I look up to see little white specks fall from the sky.
''Snow?'' I question, putting my hand out, a snowflake melts on it. I don't know why but, that little snowflake cheered me up.
I make my way home, stepping through the thick blanket of snow. On the sidewalk, I get a shiver down my back.
''It's colder than before...'' With that thought, I put my gloves on that I kept in my coat. Honestly, it's too bad that it's Friday today. I let out a short laugh. Heh, and just yesterday I was happy when school was over.
As I keep moving, a single person in the distance approaches. Though, I pay no attention to him. I want to get home as soon as possible and tell my parents about today. We move past each other, though, seeing him out of the corner of my eye, something about him causes me to halt. Do... Do I know him?
Curious, I look over my shoulder. What was supposed to be a quick check, makes me jolt. Our eyes meet. He too had turned around. It was a student around my age. His amber coloured eyes shine bright through the falling snow. He wears a beanie on top of his fuzzy ginger hair. His eyes widen for a moment, his mouth falling open soon after.
''Are you?'' He questions with a high pitched voice.
''Sorry, I got to go.'' With that rushed response, I turn back to the direction of my home. Hoping to get out of the uncomfortable situation, I speed up my pace to gain distance.
''Wait!'' I hear his distance yell. I take one last look over my shoulder, seeing him reach out with one foot forward. Though, it seems like he won't chase me for it.
I sigh with relief, releasing a big cloud in the sky. As I rush on home, I can't help but wonder. Why did it feel like I met him before?
Lost in thought about the boy I encountered, I soon reach the front door of my house.
I enter, embracing the heat of my warm home. A sweet smell of freshly baked cookies fills the air. I hurry to the living room with a grumbling stomach.
''Who wants cookies?'' Mom turns to me with a baking plate in her muffets, with on them chocolate chip delight.
''Yes please!'' I hop towards her, eating a cookie right from the plate. ''Hot!'' I almost burn my tongue. Though, once over the heat, I can taste it well. ''These are so good!'' I mumble with my mouth full. Mom giggles, placing the cookies on a scale.
We then move to the couch.
''So, how was school?'' Mom asks curious, though, somehow fearing the answer.
''Actually, it went great!'' Mom's eyes light up, wanting more elaboration on the matter.I tell her everything that happened today. Showing my notes and explaining how impressed the teacher was with me. I almost bring her to tears. And well, she isn't the only one. I can't remember the last time I felt this... alive. No hard time moving muscles, being able to focus, it's like the nightmare has ended! ... Wait a minute.
My mind reaches a conclusion it didn't before. The sudden silence causes my mom to look at me with a concerned expression.
''Honey, are you alright?'' I look in her dark blue eyes, which are shaking with worry. ''Revi?'' She adds.
''I'm fine mom. Just a bit tired.'' I laugh it off, making sure to not increase her anxiety. Even though dad isn't home yet, I feel the quiet promise we made restrains me from telling the truth.
''Okay... You should get some rest.''''Will do mom, don't worry!'' I force a smile as I head upstairs.
Having brushed my teeth and my pajamas on, I let myself fall on my bed. I stare at the poster on the ceiling. ''A dream ends, a new day arises.'' I say out loud, lifting my hand in the air towards the poster.
Thoughts race through my head. Could it be that... the nightmares aren't over? I mean, I just conquered the one that has been haunting me for months but... what if they continue nonetheless? What if this feeling of peace and happiness is just temporarily?
Now trembling in bed, I'm afraid to close my eyes once more. Though, I know from experience that I can't beat myself when it comes to sleep. No matter how terrified I am, I always fall into slumber.
My eyes get weary, my arm drifting back down on my sheets. It looks like the eventful day took its toll on me. After blinking a few times and a big yawn, my eyelids shut tight. Soon, I feel myself slipping away. Though, this time I don't know what to expect. Which scares me more than the nightmare itself.
Filled with unease, I doze off into the unknown.
