Jessica
Thursday went by quickly and Friday rolled around.
I am now sitting on the stool by my piano, my fingers on the keys but my mind blank. I can't seem to get my fingers to play anything and I groan, slamming my head on the keys which makes a disturbed noice escape the piano. Suddenly my phone starts bussing besides me and before thinking I pick it up.
"Hello." I sigh.
"Jessica." I hear Daniel breathe my name from the other side. I groan internally, why did I pick up. Because it could've been Harry my inner voice tells me.
"I'm hanging up on you." I huff but just as I'm about to end the call he chokes out a 'wait'.
"Please don't! I have something really important to tell you, please listen!" His words are rushed and his tone sad. I let out yet another sigh, this one heavier than the last one.
"Why should I listen to you? Someone once told me that all I'm good for is sex." I know I'm being childish but I have always been one to hold a grudge. I am stubborn like that.
His sigh is heavier than any of mine. "I am really sorry Jessica and I called to make it up to you." I roll my eyes. "So please just hear me out, please." Something in his voice sounds too desperate for me to say no.
"Okay, you've got 3 minutes."
"Thank you," Daniel breathes in relief. "I know how you've always wanted to be able to help others and I know you do that through your music but I thought that maybe there were something more, something grader, that you'd be able to do to help. I also know that the grades you have so far are really good and I really really really wanted to make it up to you."
"Yeah, you have a lot to make up for." I huff, still annoyed.
"Well... I talked to dad and he was able to pull some strings," He pauses. "We got you into this program for people with any kind of disability to become rehabilitation counsellors and they had a spot left even thought it has already started." Again he pauses and this time I'm not annoyed, just speechless. "If you want the spot, it's yours. Dad will take care of all the costs and everything, all you have to do is sign the papers." Daniel quiets down, possibly waiting for my reaction but I don't know what to say at this point. If he were here I would most likely would've given him a giant hug but I'm still somewhat mad at him which makes me glad that he isn't physically here. "What do you say?" His words come out just above a whisper.
"I don't know what to say," I confess. "This feels unreal, it's something I've always wanted to do." I say but then sigh. "But I don't know if I'm good enough."
"Shut up! You are the best one I know at making people feel better about themselves, this is meant for you!" Daniel tries to boosts my confidence and I shake my head.
"How long is it for?"
"It's a three year program and then a one year internship before you get your license, so if you really feel like you aren't made for this after a year you can always drop out." Daniel tells me and I nod.
"I can give it a try." I admit.
"Great!" My brother exclaims excitedly. "I'll pay dad a visit and tell him, then I will bring you the papers first thing Monday morning, sounds good?"
"Sounds good." I agree. "But just so you know, you aren't completely off the hook, I'm still mad at you."
"I understand." He sighs. We each say our 'goodbyes' before hanging up. A tiny smile is now placed on my lips, I am gonna show my mother that I too can get somewhere with my life and be successful.
