*Listen to: Batphone - Arctic Monkeys*
The opening credits are rolling on the TV. The sitting room is dark, the only source of light is a dim vintage lamp on the side table. Alex is about to light up a cigarette but his hand stops in mid air when lights from outside enter the room through the opaque blinds.
He puts the cigarette in the ashtray, and gets up from the chair. He rushes towards the panoramic windows and follows the glow of your low beams as you pass by. He knows that it's you. He recognized it numerous times.
You drive by the Tranquility Base Hotel every now and then. Even though some time has passed since the break up, you always slow down, like if a magnet was pulling you back to him. Every time, you find yourself speeding back up with tears in your eyes.
The lights disappear down the road. All Alex can see are the pink robotic flamingos in the hotel lawn. They always look eerie at night but, especially now, they look like they could kill him. The windows now are just looking out across his soul.
Alex sighs, his head looking down, locks of hair fall down on his face. He sits back in the chair and looks at his phone, imagining, hoping, that you would call. But he knows it won't happen.
He turns off the TV. And then the lamp, too. He lights up his cigarette and takes a puff, staring into the dark with sad eyes.
