I wake up and look at the calendar on my bed stand, It's March 27th, my birthday. I get up and get ready for school. I put on a plain white button-up and some black jeans, I tie my short brown hair back into a ponytail and slip-on some black dress shoes. I grab my backpack and head to school without saying a word to my parents because my mother is at work and my father expects me to take care of myself.

I get to school, throw my bag into my locker, grab my trapper keeper, and get to class. I sit down at my desk and rest my head, I don't have any friends and people know me as the quiet kid, so no one knows or cares that it's my birthday. As I'm resting my head the teacher starts to talk so I pick my head up and listen.

The bell rings to go outside so I grab my stuff and head outside. I sit alone on a hill and stare at the tall trees that sway in the wind as leaves fall from them. I was enjoying the view of the trees swaying from side to side when I hear my name being called down to the office. I sigh, grab my stuff, stand up, and head inside.

I sit down across from the principle and wait for him to talk. "Coraline," He said with a sad tone. "I'm sorry but, your mother died in a car crash this morning." He sighs and waits for a response. All of these thoughts come rushing into my head when all of a sudden I start to break down. Tears flooding my eyes and pouring down my face like a waterfall, I struggle to breathe with the clump in my throat. I cover my eyes with my hand and ball my eyes out. I manage to hear him say "I'm very sorry Coraline." through my sharp breaths and loud sobbing.

That same afternoon I walk home all alone scared of what my father might do to me. I think of all the twisted ways he can hurt me mentally and physically. I think of all the tiny tiny little things he can blame me for, knowing him he will blame me for my mother's death.

I stand in front of what I'm supposed to call my home and stare not wanting to walk into the abuse I have waiting for me. I take a deep but shaky breath and walk inside mentally screaming at every single tiny noise I make. I slip off my black polished shoes, set down my navy blue bag, and run to my room. But before I got to even take a step into my safe place I run into something, rather someone.
