 School, January 24th-

Darryl was relieved to come back from winter break. His Christmas was spent in his room, playing with a few toys that his grandparents got him for the holiday, again, listening to the yells through the thin, apartment walls.

He glanced at the large, purple bruise on his wrist, and pulled his sleeve down to cover it, just in case. He kept coloring until lunch time.

Vincent, Darryl, and Zak all sat next to each other as they normally would. Zak pulled out his sandwich while Vincent and Darryl sat down with their lunch trays of the suspicious cafeteria food.

"Hey guys, my mom said that you guys could come over to my house this weekend if you want to!" Zak said, enthusiastically.

"That should be fine with me! I will have to ask my parents if I can come before I do though." Vincent replied.

"I should be able to make it." Darryl said softly after swallowing his food.

Zak took a bite of his sandwich. "Ok! I am really excited!" He exclaimed, his mouth full.

A teacher walked by "Zak, don't talk with your mouth full please."

 Zak's house, January 26th-

After Vincent and Darryl both arrived at their friend's house, they all went into his room and began playing.

As Darryl looked around, he noticed how large Zak's room was, and how many toys he had, when in reality, it was just average. But Darryl was still so mesmerized by it all. He noticed how his mother hardly raised her voice, and when they ate lunch, he noticed how it wasn't all leftovers, and instead it was freshly cooked food. But he still didn't understand that his way of living wasn't as normal as he had originally thought.

All day they played different games, talked, watched cartoons, and just had a fun time overall. They were best friends after all, and nothing would ever separate them.

School, February 14th-

It was Valentines Day. So like most schools, they had one of those class parties. The classmates would bring those store - bought cards and hand them out, there would be those pink frosted sugar cookies and those mini cupcakes. The classroom was decorated with pink and red hearts the children had cut out a few days before.

Darryl hardly even knew what Valentines Day was. Like, yeah he had heard a bit about in cartoons and things like that, but his parents never really celebrated it. He didn't know it was that big of a holiday until he started school.

Zak had made personal cards for his friends instead of . A heart cutout of red construction paper with the words "Thank u for b ing my freind! Hapy Valntins Day!"  Scribbled out in crayon on it. He gave them to both Vincent and Darryl.

They both thanked and hugged him as they walked back to their desk. Before Darryl put it in his card in his backpack, he admired it for a few seconds, before carefully placing it inside.

Time Skip - sorry im lazy

After recess, when Darryl sat down in his chair, he realized that he had sat on something. He subtly stood up and picked up whatever it was that he had sat on. It was a card with a lollipop attached to it. He opened the card, it read,

Happy Valentines Day, Darryl

I hope you have a great day and always remember that you can talk to me whenever you need to.

Ms. Williams

The words meant a lot to him, he smiled and put the card in his bag. He glanced over to her, and mouthed "Thank you."

im sorry time skip again im tired

When Darryl go home, he sat his bag down beside the door of his room. He opened it and took out the paper bag of cards that he got. He went through all of the regular cards that the kids handed out to everyone. He smiled at each one, he was never really used to affection.

Soon he go to Zak's card. He held the card and looked at it for a while. He snapped out of his trance and set it down, separate from the rest of the cards. Finally, he pulled out Ms. William's card. It felt nice in a way. Like he had a motherly figure. But when his door flung open, maybe then it might have clicked in his small, innocent mind...

This isn't how an average family works, is it?
