[A/N: I'm going to post this before the other chapters so I can consider it part of Mermay lol, what can I say I love peer pressure]

Pirates are interesting. In all of 707's life, he had never once quite understood why they are the way they are. In his culture, songs were to be appreciated, of course, but a siren's voice was to be held very highly.

Pirates seemed to think the opposite. They clearly enjoyed voices... But they all did. They all sang, they all danced. It was a free-for-all of pure enjoyment. Songs were something that you didn't have to prepare for, they just happened.

And he was envious.

He wasn't even a siren who preformed; he lured sailors to their deaths and sold their flesh for high prices. He didn't even allow his voice to be heard by civilians. But he was envious. He loved the energy. He loved how much they could move (with their legs and all), and he wished mermaids danced like that.

He sat at the top of the ocean, watching the pirates from a distance. Moonlight danced across the water, mocking his lack of participation in the event. He would pick a fight with the water, but alas it could not fight back (which would not be fair). He tried to listen to the song, but all he could hear was garbled noises and laughter.

This would not do. He ducked under the water and swam to the dock, only daring to break the surface of the water once he was hidden underneath it. From here he could clearly hear the tune, and he closed his eyes as he listened. Being a siren, he naturally was very musically inclined and intended to repeat the tune later. He could see why the pirates enjoyed the song so much.

Eventually, he heard footsteps over his head. He quickly ducked under the water, vanishing from sight.

MC parted from the crowd, a smile still on her face. She lived for these moments with her crew, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to take a breather. She stopped at the end of the dock, deciding to sit at the end with her feet hanging off into the sea.

She closed her eyes and listened to the music, though it was quieter. The nice breeze was refreshing on her face. Those were the moments she lived for as a pirate. She could've wound up very differently, but she made the choice three years ago to abandon her past life and live a free life.

She never regretted it.

She opened her eyes finally, then it hit her that it had been three years. Three years today. She lifted her locket from her neck and examined it. It was a familiar sight, a small metal locket in the shape of a sea-shell. It was given to her years ago by a dear friend of hers.

She popped it open, then looked at the picture. There she could see her younger self with a wide grin on her face, her arms wrapped around her friend. She was noticeably shorter than her, and had long blonde hair that curled slightly. She was smiling sweetly, always having been more humble than MC.

It was a shame that no one heard her as she jumped over the edge of the ship.

"MC!" Her shipmate yelled. MC jumped, dropping her locket into the ocean.

"You shithead!" She yelled back. "You made me drop my locket!"

"How deep is the water!?" Her shipmate asked as they ran up to her.

She leaned over the edge and sighed. "I can't see the bottom, so pretty deep."

"I'm sorry!!"

"Whatever, what did you want to tell me?"

"We're going to sleep."

"I'm going to stay out here for a bit longer and mourn the loss of my locket." She said with a frown. "Goodnight, though."

"Yeah, 'night. I hope your locket washes up on shore or something."

"Me too." MC waved as her shipmate walked back off the dock and onto the ship. She turned, then looked back out over the water. She pulled one leg up and tucked it under the other, grabbing it absentmindedly as she stared into the distance. Suddenly the breeze wasn't so refreshing.

Just then, her locket shot out of the water and hit her in the head. It landed safely in her lap, though it was soaking wet. MC's eyes widened as she picked it up. What was that? She leaned forwards and looked into the water, but there was nothing but her reflection.

~~~
"I shouldn't have done that," 707 muttered to himself over and over as he swam back down to the bottom of the ocean. "That was a stupid idea. A very stupid idea."
Though, it was worth it to know she was happier now.
