Chapter 36

Sam had his eyes in front while a pen was being played on one hand. After a couple of minutes, he began to hit the end of the pen on his desk repeatedly, creating a small, rhythmic thumping. He was deep in thought, replaying the scenes over and over again from last week. It has been four days since the night Skye was forced into submission... by him using just words.

During the four days, he wanted to weigh the moral dilemma of it all but he was still too pissed whenever he thought of Skye. He was not okay with manipulating someone by making them obey him. He was not okay with using people to cater to his wishes. He was not okay with Jae finding out that he had this kind of power and judge him for it. Yet, this power was the only advantage he had over any of the Clauses. For the first time, he felt hope for his first win against them.

Mind control- such an invasive and evil kind of influence that he would be ashamed of using, but he'd rather know how to use it when his life is in danger rather than completely disregarding its use to him. Although that might mean succumbing to his wicked lineage that he wanted nothing to be part of.

He let out a sigh, letting his tapping cease for a moment before starting again. It was already too late anyway. The moment he was conceived, he was born to be his descendant. Even if Sam had nothing to do with it. Even when he just wanted to have a normal life. He pushed away from the moral predicament that always made him hesitant in using whatever control he had.

It's either be caught and killed or fight back. He'd rather die than let any one of the Claus family take him alive. Who knows what they'll do to him. And what will happen if they reach the rest of his family? Thinking of family made his thoughts flutter to Sera and then quickly shook these away. No. He was still mad at her. Sera had abandoned him after she promised she wouldn't. She's the least of his problems anyway.

He needs to have a plan and backup plans on what to do with the Clauses. When push comes to shove, he'll use this power he had that he still has no idea how to trigger. He listed mentally all the things that happened that night that activated it but for some reason, it hadn't worked.

Sam had tried a number of trials. He'd tell a random stranger to pick up something that he dropped or maybe stop a person from going into a certain direction but they'd either shoot him glares or cast confused looks. He got a hard punch from the delivery man when he told him to 'turn around and leave'. A large, nasty bruise had formed on his right eye, right when the bruise from Skye's punch was healing, but that didn't stop him from thinking about what he's doing wrong.

What was it? What happened that night that activated it?

"Can you please stop with the tapping? It's distracting." The girl next to him glowered at him. Sam stopped moving his hand and glanced with an unamused smile at the girl. The girl's face dropped and then turned back to the front to where the professor was.

Sam felt himself getting riled up but took in one deep breath to calm himself. That was another thing he had noticed. Everything and everyone pissed him off to no end. It wasn't like before where he can ignore their presence and just relish in his own time. He tsk-ed before going back to his thoughts.

Where was he? Oh, right. What triggered his power? He can't place it. Nothing even happened? Skye just came barging in like a drunkard looking for a fight. And Sam responded, although uncharacteristically. He was always level-headed and cool when facing off his dominance over someone yet that wasn't what happened with Skye. He totally lost his cool and felt his emotions leaking—

Wait. That was it. He was high on emotions. Unconsciously, he began to tap his pen on his desk as his eyes widened slightly. Was that really it? He focused on the emotions he had felt that night. Self-hatred. Rage. Sadness. Guilt. Fear. A little too much of everything that fought over each other like kittens squeezing themselves to have their mother's milk. Was that the answer? He should let go of his apathy and let his emotions run free?

The girl grunted and shot him another look, "I told you to stop," she whispered, revulsion all over her face as she stared at his purple-covered face. "Freak."

In an instant, Sam felt himself snap as he coolly gazed his attention over to the girl. Electricity jolted his body as a mocking grin twisted itself on his mouth. Sam dropped his pen on the floor. "Oops," he muttered. "Get that for me."

The girl felt frustration bubble up inside of her as she prepared to call him a string of curses but her body began to move on its own. She bent down to pick up the pen before straightening her spine, her hand reaching over to him with the pen. She was a little confused about why she did that.

Sam took the pen from her hand. "Good. Now," Sam had wanted to make her do something embarrassing just for the sake of fun but quickly shook his thoughts away, "Keep your eyes in front and don't bother me again."

The girl nodded as fear ran down her arm. "I understand," she stammered before focusing her eyes in front.

Sam smiled as his emotions began to dissipate once the root of frustration was solved. Once he was in complete control of his feelings, a flash of regret crossed his face. He let out a quiet sigh.

It was lunchtime and Sam walked briskly along the hallway. Jae had sent him a text a while ago if he wanted to have lunch with him. It was the first time Jae reached out after she left his apartment that night. Annoyance gripped his system as thought about what Jae must have said to Skye to make him appear at his doorway that night. She must have slipped something that made Skye suspicious of him.

Sam pushed down his annoyance roughly down the pits of his stomach. No, he was here to apologize. No more drama between them. He just wanted to fix things between him and her. Maybe try and start over.

He entered the cafeteria and immediately saw Jae alone on a table. For some reason, the sight of Jae made his worries temporarily disappear as he watched her eat her food slowly just to wait for him even if she has been here for an hour. He debated whether to sit in front of Jae as usual or sit beside her. Well, if they're going to talk, he needed to be as close to her as possible.

Sam sat down on the table next to Jae, placing his things and his bag next to him. Jae was about to greet him when she let out a surprised gasp. "Oh my god, Sam. What the hell happened to your face?" she asked worriedly, her palm almost going to touch the side of his face but briefly stopped. "Who did this to you?"

Sam pursed his lips, feeling good about the extra attention. "I don't want to tell you."

Jae pouted a little and crossed her arms. "Why not? That looks bad! Let's get you an ice pack."

"Maybe later, Jae." He paused before scratching his temple bashfully with a finger. "I wanted to apologize. You were right, I was being stupid and letting myself be blindsided by anger. I just—" He stopped to think of the right words, "—want us to be friends again."

Jae's gaze softened. Sam has rarely apologized to her and it was the first he'd done it heartily. "I forgive you. Just please don't do that again," she remarked. She hesitated at first before she scooted nearer to him and then wrapped her arms around his neck. "I'm just glad you're fine."

Sam tensed at the gesture, seeing that there were a lot of people that could be watching them right now, but he melted at her touch. Jae really was something different. His wish to have a normal life extended to Jae; he wanted to be normal with her. "Thanks, CJ," he whispered, trying to lighten up the moody atmosphere.

Jae pulled back with a scowl. "Ugh, you're back, asshole." She rolled her eyes. "At least we've fixed things," she murmured as her eyes went to her phone. Suddenly, she had an itch to ask, "Hey, have you seen Skye lately? He hasn't been answering my texts."
