Chapter seventeen

As I saw the caller ID, I glanced at Victoria and saw her staring at the ceiling boards. I had to think fast.

"Victoria" I called

"Hmmmm?."

"You know, when I got the call about you being rushed to the hospital, I was actually in the middle of a conversation with my parents and now mum's calling, I'll pick it up while I go he you something to eat" I said

"Okay"

That was close, I didn't lie though her mum is still my mum though STEP

"Hi Val" I said as I picked up the phone

"Rex son, how are you doing?" She asked pleasantly, that explained her teaching her daughter to be nice to all

"Very fine mum" I said and she giggled at the other end like a small child

"And Victoria?" She asked and I hesitated

"She's fine" I said

"What's wrong, Rex?' she asked. It seemed like she had noticed the hesitation in my voice because she had paused a bit before she asked

"You're asthmatic right?" I asked

"O my God don't tell me she inherited that" she said quietly her voice wavering

'well she did and she's.at the hospital because she told no one but kept it to herself for so long" I said

"Is my presence needed?, Do I need to come over soon?"

" No she's fine"

"You sure or that's what the doctor says?"

I took a deep breath as I walked into the restaurant before answering her

"Thats what the doctor said but she looks fine" I said and pointed to the chicken and chips on the menu

"I really feel like taking my private jet down there immediately" she said

"I really wouldnt like you to complicate things but if this is the grand way you would like to get her back then it is cool you can come over" I said

"I haven't thought about that yet but It wont be long. I'll be there soon, just take care of her okay? "

"I'm going to take care of her because I love her and she's my responsibility and also I don't know the next time I'm going to see her again after now" And the tears I had been holding for a long while finally fell together with emotions I couldn't decipher

"Rex, she's been your responsibility ever since she was little even though I have not actually come to understand why but I'm pretty sure you've grown fond of her if not you wouldn't mind me taking her away. You were the mother and father in her life and I owe you so much for that because no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't so I don't plan on taking her away. I plan on building a branch there and managing it from there so she can be with you all" she said

I let out a deep breath that I didn't know I was holding and cleaned my eyes as I muttered a thank you to her

"I owe you" she said "And I wouldn't mind if you could come over some days" she added and trust me I was all into it

I walked into the ward to meet the Robert family I checked my time and it was then I realized it was already eight, I had not even realized that a lot of time had passed while waiting

"you dont mind leaving now do you?" Kaceasked

"no I dont, I'll be leaving now" I said and dropped the food on the table as I shot a smile at my best friend that smiled back

"Goodnight Victoria" I said giving her a peck on the cheek

"I'll walk you to the parking lot" Alexandra said and we walked out

The silence in the elevator was becoming unbearable and there was tension in the air

'This is the right time to tell her' my mind said to me just then it dawned on me during the whole chaos I had forgotten my goal for the day as I remembered I started struggling wishing I would know what was going on in her mind before doing what I wanted to do

"Lexie" I said when I finally encouraged myself and realized that there is no harm in trying

"Yeah?" she asked

I closed my eyes thinking of the best way to say this to her

"I really don't think this is the right way to say this but one thing I know is that if I dont say this now I dont think I'll ever be able to say this again. I dont think I'll ever find the best way to say this" I paused and looked at her face that was almost emotionless

"go on" she said and that was enough courage I needed to let the three words out of my lips

"I like you"  It seemed the elevator understood because at that instant, the bell rung and the elevator door opened. I glanced at her and saw her face still emotionless. The tension in the air was so much as none of us said a word to each other as we walked to my car

"Goodnight" I said as I entered the drivers seat of the car and for the first time since morning I saw Alex smile

"Do you know why I did not answer you?" Alex asked

"no" I said

"I wanted to be sure, I am not dreaming" she said and my heart skipped a beat

"You know what Rex, I like you too and I've always dreamed of this day" she said with a smile and I came out to give her a bone crashing hug.

"You made my night, you know with Victoria in the clinic, I didnt even have the thought of sleep" I said

"Good to know babe, goodnight you better sleep tight" she said and I bent my face to peck her on her cheek when she turned her face and her lips met mine. I didn't think twice all I was sure of is that I wanted to enjoy the moment and I let myself in giving her the best of my kisses

"You dont know how much I've wanted this" I mummured against her lips biting her lower lip asking for entrance as my tongue laced with hers. We finally pulled back to calch our breath

"Goodnight baby" I said brushing my lips against hers before I entered my car and drove off
