Life of a Keeper

My knees ache from kneeling for so long in this cold musty alley. I groan and lean my shoulder against the brick wall of some abandoned factory. A few weeks ago a rumor about a new vampire started circulating, and the Keeper's decided to look into it. We eventually got a solid tip, that the new vamp had been turned here and was still hanging around the spot. That wasn't surprising. New vampires are usually too disoriented to leave the area. Since I work for the Keeper's, I got dragged into a stake out of sorts.

Some vampire had decided it was a good idea to turn a human, and by doing so they had ruined my vacation, and put the entire vampire population at risk. Turned humans are kind of like puppies, except if you abandon them they might take part in mass murder.

A door creaks open and I go still, waiting. The door clicks shut, footsteps quietly move toward me, and suddenly I have a feeling. If I were still human, my heart would probably skip and few beats right now, and I'd have a cold sweat running down my back. Instead, I just feel incredibly uneasy. I feel like prey.

The footsteps pause, and something scrambles across the ground to my right. My senses feel scattered, and I try to focus in on the person as they move by me. Their body comes into view, tall and lean. I wonder if this is the alleged baby vampire. He moves smoothly though, not with the usual confusion that a turned would. I frown and start moving forward to get a better look. My foot taps a small rock, and I freeze. So does the man. One second passes, and then another, both of us waiting for the other to make a move. He sniffs, and then looks right at me. I can't see his face, and I get ready to run. I don't want to lose a fight to him. He looks down the alley for a moment longer, and then turns and walks away.

I stay frozen, relief making me weak. I'll wait until he's gone and then report to the Keeper's.

"Aren't you coming" he pauses and looks back over his shoulder. "Keeper?" The air around me feels ice cold.
