A day off, you thought, would consist of relaxing on a planet somewhere, reading a book, eating snacks, napping... but instead it consisted of you hanging out and doing nothing with your best friend Rocket except watching little baby Groot.

"I am Groot!" Groot shouted, running through the grass.

"Yeah, yeah." Rocket crossed his arms as he followed you out of the Milano and onto the planet that was literally just a grassfield. "Have fun, but don't get out of my sight! Do you hear me?"

"I am Groot!" he exclaimed loudly, disappearing into the tall grass.

"I can't believe it," you said. "Our one day off, and we are doing this. Gamora and Peter get a date night like always, Drax gets a nap, and we are on babysitting duty. Again."

"Oh keep complainin', that'll help," he said sarcastically. "This is your fault anyway. You had to promise Groot we could play outside, and now we are on this dump grass planet that smells like moldy water and bugs." He clenched his fists. "And why is the air so wet?!"

"Humidity," you said, wiping your damp forehead. "It's miserable here."

"Yeah," Rocket agreed. "It's too freakin' hot. We ain't stayin' here forever." He cupped his hands in front of him face. "You hear me, Groot?! We ain't staying out here all day! Get your energy out then get on back!"

"I am Groot!" Groot yelled, jumping out of the grass with his arms over his head. He ran up to a puddle in the middle of a naked patch of pure mud in front of him.

"Don't you dare!" Rocket scolded. Groot's feet dug into the mud as he stopped at the edge of the dirty puddle. "Don't jump in that, Groot. You know ___ will make you take a bath before you get our room all dirty."

"I am Groot," he said, crossing his arms. He really wanted to jump in the puddle.

"No." Rocket shook his head.

"I am Groot!"

"No!"

"I am Groot, I am Groot, I am Groot. am Groot!" he yelled.

"What did you just say?" Rocket asked. Groot repeated himself and the raccoon looked at you, lifting his shoulders up in confusion. "The kid says his feet are thirsty, so he has to jump in the puddle."

"I thought that's what he said," you said. You couldn't help but smile. It was such a cute and innocent sentence. "Okay, Groot. You can jump in the puddles. But there is gonna be bath time is later tonight, okay?"

"I am Groot!" The little tree wasted no time to leap into the air. He splashed into the puddle, covering himself in muck. He happily stomped and giggled and cheered as he made a huge mess.

Rocket shook his head. "You're a huge softie."

"Yeah? Well, so are you. You took him here. I was gonna make him wait until we found a planet that wasn't so wet, but you insisted we let him play for a while," you pointed out.

"Aw, shut up," he grumbled. "I ain't as soft as you are, humie."

"Hm," you said, lifting your eyebrows.

Of course you didn't believe him. You couldn't, especially when you crouched on the ground to get closer to Groot and Rocket actually smiled. He liked seeing the kid --- his kid, really --- happy. You picked a twig up off the ground and waved it in front of Groot. He grabbed onto it and used it to swing his body forward and dive into the puddle. You cheered as he made a "big" splash that he was clearly proud of.

"Yay, Groot!" you exclaimed.

"Ya know," Rocket said, watching Groot, "this whole parenting thing isn't so bad I guess."

"Yeah?" You looked at him. "You like the whole dad job?"

"Sometimes." Rocket helped Groot climb out of the puddle. "But don't start making fun of me for sayin' that, because I know you do too! He calls you mom enough."

"Yeah," you agreed. "He calls Gamora that too. And Peter, sometimes."

Rocket snickered. "At least the kid has a pretty good family."

"Yeah," you said again. You smiled at your best friend before you stood back up, wiping the mud from your hands. "Should we make him come inside?"

"Aw, nah. Let's give the kid a couple of minutes longer." Rocket watched Groot happily.

"You big softie," you said, stepping back to avoid the inevitable swipe of his claws that would follow.

He whirled around, scratching out and fuming as you laughed loudly. He stepped back, paws clenched at his sides as he snarled. "What did I tell you!?"
