life and death

when does life end?
when does death start?

gold and diamonds cover you from head to toe.
your lips red and sparkling.
they look at you up and down.
sway you side to side.
compliments and praises ignite your soul.
and so you're off playing every single role.

your cheeks press against the cold tiled floor.
eyes focused on nothing.
you hear footsteps and you struggle to stand up. be a good soldier!
another moment on the ground and surely you'll fall.
down. down. down.

giggling, you faced the crowd.
eyes bright and you wave with your newly manicured nails.
you've gotten used to people wanting you. following you.
in envy or admiration?
doesn't matter.
you want it. crave it.
and so on they scream your name.

does it hurt? does it sting?
you truly can't quite tell anymore.
everything's the same.
is it loud?
you thought you were laughing.
they said you were screaming.
the footsteps are back.
but this time you know it's your heart begging to be let out.

when does life end?
when does death start?
maybe we'll never know.
