Scarlet wouldn't like to admit she was jealous when Katherine arrived. Who wouldn't? Scarlet was always number 1 girl in the newsies eyes. Always being their little sister; playing jokes at work; lots of hugs ; playing pranks on one another. But soon after the strike it looked like she was being replaced.

It obviously started with Jack. He wouldn't stop talking about the girl. Always going on dates and drawing her pictures. He sometimes came back late so he wouldn't be able to talk to Scarlet. When  he did come back on time Katherine would always be there.

"I'm back!"

Scarlet ran down the stairs with excitement. She barely saw Jack all day and was missing him. Scarlet hoped they would catch up on the rooftop or even relax on the couch as Race played cards. Jack would mess with her hair as she fell asleep.

"Guys Katherine here!" Specs called and the boys went down to meet Katherine. They all began asking how her day was or even having a joke.

Scarlet stopped on the steps and huffed. Why didn't she get that attention? She was there from the start! Not this red head!

With a huff Scarlet turned and went upstairs.

This also started to happen with the other newsies.

"Racetrack where were you yesterday?" Scarlet smiled as she went behind the couch. She messed with his hair which he told her to stop at. Scarlet rolled her eyes and repeated her question. Race said "Oh I took Katherine to the races"

Scarlet stopped a moment.
"The races?"

"Yeah said she never been to them. Well the not really fancy ones"

"But..but that's our thing.." Scarlet went quite. She remembered the first time she went with Race. It was so exciting and she joins him anytime he goes.

"I know. Just she's never been before" Race went back to whatever.

"She could've gone herself" Scarlet muttered to herself and walked off. Perhaps she could go by herself from now on...

....

"Hey, Albert you wanna get a bucket full of water and-"

"Sorry Scarlet. Katherine is playing poker with Race and she might beat him"

Albert and some boys ran past her as she stood with the bucket. Her hands shook causing ripples in the water. Her eyes teared up.

She got frustrated and threw the bucket on the ground before going towards the bunk room.

"Scarlet!" Crutchie  called seeing the water "Is everything--"

Scarlet closed the door shut.

Even her best friend, Romeo, was loving Katherine.

"She's so pretty. She even knew my name before I told her"

"How interesting" Scarlet mumbled as they spoke on her bunk. Romeo gave her a side glance "Come on you usually find this stuff funny" He nudged her.

"Well I don't now" She climbed off her bunk.

One day when Katherine visited everyone was in the main room, including Scarlet this time. She wasn't paying attention to Katherine or any complaints she was getting from the boys.

"I was here first. Where's my complaints?" She flicked her hair off her face. How come she got replaced? Why not Race or Finch? Or anyone?

Scarlet glanced at Katherine then the sparkle on her hand. She was wearing a crystal blue ring. It was probably diamond and must cost a lot of money.
