It surprised me that Esther was also held back, but I didn't mind her company. I had never been 'in trouble' before by a teacher, and I guessed that Esther had not either, but she looked way more scared than I was. She stood next to me as the Professor began to speak.
"I just wanted to tell you, Esther, that if you don't feel well, even if it is the first day of school, you don't have to come to class. Just tell one of your friends to take notes for you, and they can get you the extra papers. It's not a big deal, I'm sure every Professor at this university would understand if you missed class due to a sick day. To you, Jeremy, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed seeing the good deed you did to help Esther," Professor Masson said to us.
"Well, Thank you, Professor, for being so understanding," I replied. I also put my arm around Esther and rubbed her back some, for I think she was still a little bit in shock.
"You're very welcome my dear," Professor Masson said to me. Then she turned to Esther and said, "you're very lucky to have a boyfriend like him."
Both Esther and I began to jumble up our words. "No, no, no. We're not together. We are just friends. No dating whatsoever. Believe me on this," we both said all at once.
"Oh, I'm sorry children, I just thought that...oh well never mind what I thought. I'm very sorry for the mixup," Professor Masson apologized.
"That's okay, it happens a lot," I said chuckling some. Esther hit me kind of hard on the shoulder, but I just smiled at her. Soon she smiled back.
"Well, you two better be off to class or lunch," Professor Masson said as she pushed us to the door, "I will see you both at the next lecture."
