CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
MIDNIGHT CITY [M83]

"I'll do it, it's fine." Nova announced to the group. They all looked at her confused, she was normally not one to be involved.

"You're not." JJ replied simply to the girl, looking down at her as if she was small.

"Yeah." She fired bluntly, "I am. It's my dad, I want to know. And you can't stop me so you better just help me. "

He threw his hands up in surrender, causing her to roll her eyes, "Just help me move these."

She spoke, her eyes flickering to the branches covering the open space in the concrete.

The group moved apart the branches, John B grunting as he broke them.

"Got it?" She asked as they struggled, they boys replied quickly,

"Yep, yeah we got it."

Nova looked up at the opening, taking a deep breath. She wondered what was in there, trying not to think about it she shook her head quickly. Back down the earth Nova.

"Boost her." John B ordered the blonde boy, who nodded and crouched.

"I'm gonna give you a boost, all right. I've seen it in the movies several times." He mentioned. She scoffed at his words, bringing her hand up to switch her part, her red strands poking through.

"Ready?" He questioned, his hands out.

Nova hesitated, "Remind me what we're looking for?"

John B nodded at her, "You'll know when you see it."

She dapped her brother up, placed a light kiss on Kiaras cheek and gave a pope and awkward salut type thing. JJ was being controlling; he didn't need anything right now.

"Hold my flashlight." She ordered her brother, getting her feet in place on JJ's hands.

"All right one-" JJ began, cut off by Nova stepping up quickly.

"Okay nevermind. Just forget about three." He huffed.

Nova mumbled an array of swears as she entered the weird cave rock thing, her hands scratched up by the rocks.

JJ laughed at her language, calling up to her when she seemed to be okay, "Watch your mouth."

Nova rolled her eyes, though he couldn't see it.

Now he wanted to listen to her?

"Okay, flashlight." She asked.

Pope handed her one quickly, "Yeah, here."

She grabbed the flashlight from Pope's hand, switching it on promptly.

Glancing around inside she didn't see much, just rock and overgrown plants. She was almost entranced by it though, tracing the way the vines traveled up and down.

"You alive?" Her brother asked from outside, always worried for her, "You got, like a-- a heartbeat and everything?"

"So far." She muttered as she looked up, following the vines and the rocks. There was a crack in the side, one that she couldn't quite see.

"Uhhh." She hesitated, her voice rough, "I need some more light."

John B put a light through the opening instantly, "Yeah, yeah, here I gotcha."

Nova walked around some more, slowly walking closer to the crack in the rock. Her mouth parted slightly, falling agape in confusion.

"Found something?" JJ asked from the outside, "Is there gold?"

"Oh my God." The words tumbled from her lips, emptying to the floor like powder.

She didn't even feel herself reaching out to grab the envelope, her eyes scanning the words quickly, 'For Bird and Blossom."

She handed it through the opening, a hand grabbing the package briskly.

She grunted as she exited the opening in the concrete, JJ giving her a hand that she unfortunately had to accept. Dusting herself off when she landed again.

"Holy shit." She heard her brother whisper. She found herself mildly speechless, too caught up in the words she read.

"This is from our dad." Her brother stated softly.

Nova heard a lighter flicker, JJ lighting a joint to take a hit quickly blowing the smoke out into the night air.

The group looked over the lighter flickers, seeing people approaching hastily, "Code red. Code red, square groupers." JJ muttered.

"Go!" Kie yelled as the group began to run away, briskly making their way through the graveyard.

"It's the guys that robbed your house." JJ stated as they moved.

They ducked behind a wall quickly, all whisper-yelling for JJ to turn off his light.

Nova peered around the corner, "Do you think it's really them?" She asked.

JJ glanced too, watching the men in the golf cart pull out a weapon, "Homies got a gun!"

Kie sat up quickly, "Screw this." She spoke, making her escape.

The group ran towards the fence, all climbing over quickly.

Except for Pope.

"Guys! I'm stuck!" He called out to the group who were already on their way towards the van.

JJ yelled back, "Pope, c'mon!"

They all stammered out words as they tried to remove him, "Wait! You're gonna rip me!"

"You're fine dude let's go." Nova called back.

The girls broke out into a fit of laughs as they ran away, Pope's pants staying behind on the fence.

"Nice." JJ stated,

"It's a little tootsie roll."
