Sophie POV

Sophie emerged from her book to see Dex plop down at their usual lunch table. He and Biana had turned in their essay in english today. Sophie and Fitz still needed to do some revisions before theirs would be ready.

Sophie put a scrap of paper in her book, closed it, and set it on her backpack. "I thought you'd never get through that line."

"It was pretty long today." Dex usually got lunch from the cafeteria. "You're lucky you don't have to do get lunch here."

Sophie nodded and stabbed a noodle with her fork. She made herself lunch most of time, but Dex was too busy with his younger siblings to do that. The triplets were trouble makers, and unfortunately, Dex usually got stuck dealing with them.

Marella sat down next to Sophie. "Hey losers, what's up?"

"I was saying how lucky Sophie is," Dex answered her, "because she doesn't have to get lunch at school."

Marella picked up a piece of lunch. "But who wouldn't want to eat this...um..." she nibbled at it. "....Delicious...er....food?"

"Yes, I wonder why Sophie wouldn't want to eat that?" Jensi settled into the seat next to Dex.

That was their lunch group: Sophie, Dex, Marella, and Jensi. Occasionally, Tam and Linh would sit with them, but usually they sat with Linh's boyfriend, Wylie, and his friends. Sophie wasn't popular, but she had a few friends that she could depend on, and that was enough for her. She might have Fitz, Biana, and Keefe now, too.

"I can't believe you!" The cafeteria went silent when Stina yelled. "You took the guy I have a crush on, and you spent the weekend doing homework and having a sleepover with them !" Stina pointed a bony finger at Sophie's table. "I am your friend! Not those two!"

Maruca, who was standing next to Stina, nodded.

"Hey," Marella poked Sophie's arm. "What's she talking about?"

"Dex and I spent the night at the Vacker's house with Tam, Linh, and Keefe Sencen." Sophie shrugged. "It wasn't a big deal. We did homework, played some games, watched a movie, and Keefe asked Biana out."

"How is that not a 'big deal,'" Marella picked up lunch tray and bag, "You two can't just ditch us the second someone 'cooler' wants to hang out with you. Come on Jensi, we're sitting somewhere else."

Sophie watched Jensi and Marella walk away, "It didn't even occur to me that they would want to come. It was homework!"

"I know," Dex said, "But Stina's still yelling at Biana."

Sophie looked back toward the three girls. "We should do something."

But before they could, Biana ran out of the cafeteria. Likely towards the bathroom, where she could cry without being watched by the whole school. (They all had lunch at the same time). Sophie went after Biana, ignoring Dex's calls for her to come back.

When Sophie entered the bathroom she saw Biana standing over a sink, doing her best to hold back her tears. It didn't seem to be working very well.

"Hey, Biana." Sophie moved closer to her. "Are you okay?"

Biana POV

"Are you okay?" Sophie's voice echoed off the bathroom's tile walls.

Am I okay? Really, Sophie? How could she not realize that everything was so, so wrong. Biana had lost friends she'd had for years.

"What do you think?" Biana felt a tear roll down her cheek. "Do I look okay to you?"

"Not really," Sophie winced, "Sorry, that was a stupid question." She moved forward and wrapped her arms around Biana. "I'm here."

Biana returned the hug gratefully, and gave up on trying not to cry. "I don't know what I did wrong."

"Nothing. You did nothing wrong. If they decide that they don't want to be friends with you because you have a boyfriend or other friends, that is entirely their fault."

"But Stina had a crush on Keefe, and I'm going out with him. And I always invite her and Maruca over on the weekend." Biana pulled out of the hug.

"No. This is not your fault. If Stina did nothing about her crush, then you have no reason to feel guilty." Sophie put her hand on Biana's shoulder. "If she and Maruca are mad that you had people that weren't them at your house, they need to understand that you are way too awesome to only have them as friends."

Biana sniffled. "Do you really think that?"

"I know it." Sophie said, "Let's get you cleaned up. Where's your makeup bag?"

They emerged from the bathroom about 15 minutes later, with Biana looking like herself again.

"Thank you for doing this for me." Biana tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.

"No problem," Sophie responded, "I'm glad that I was able to. Do you want to sit with Dex and I from now on?"

Biana smiled. "I'd love to, but would Jensi and Marella mind?"

"Oh," Sophie looked down, "I think we made them mad by going to your house."

"Oh my gosh! I am so sorry!" Biana apologized. "I didn't realize!"

"Like I said about Stina and Maruca: if they can't handle me having friends that aren't them, then that is their problem." Sophie told her.

As they entered the Cafeteria, the bell rang. Biana watched as Sophie darted through the crowd of people, trying to get to her bag and Dex. He met her halfway and handed it to her. The two of them started back towards Biana. Once they reached her, the three of them walked together towards the Gym.

Biana was glad that PE was their next class because she didn't think that she'd be able to make it through a class period with Stina and Maruca right then. They were in her PE class, but Sophie, Dex, Fitz, Keefe, Linh, and Tam were, too. She would get through this, and she would have the support of new friends to help her.
