I was silent for a minute, shared with the same silence from the other end. This voice echoing around in my head. I tried to figure out just who this could be that just called me. And more importantly, how this person got my number and knew my name. Barely anyone knew the number to my landline. Mostly because I prefer to use my cell phone, after all; that's why I bought it.
Every voice from everyone I knew filtered through my mind, trying to think if I recognized any of them as the voice on the other end but nothing came to mind. Nothing matched. That alarmed me. "Are you there, Stella?" At the last part of that sentence, a chill sent down my spine. How does this person know my name? "Who is this?" I answered, my voice shaky and hesitant. Shannon eyed me. She mouthed the words "Who is it?" I just mouthed that I didn't know.
That seemed to worry her seeming as her eyes got wide. Even without an exchange of words from her and I knew what she was thinking. "Well, it's about time you answer." The voice replied. Whoever was speaking had a deep voice, definitely from a man. Again I repeated my question, this time with more demand. "Oh Stella, don't sound so alarmed." Damn right I'm alarmed. I thought, but ignoring the statement I pressed further with my questions. "How did you get my number?"
Having said this, Shannon's fears got worse as she stepped closer to me as if trying to hear what the man on the other end was saying. Perhaps she was trying to figure out if she recognized the voice? The man didn't respond for a second. As if trying to find an answer. "That doesn't matter. I have a question for you though. You have a sister right? Named Shannon?" At the sound of her name being said by this mans voice she backed up and looked me in the eyes. I returned her gaze. Our fears were correct. This was Jason.
Seeing the fear in my sisters eyes changed my emotions almost instantly. Fear turned into protective mode as I gripped the phone tighter. "Listen here, don't call this number again, because I am calling the police and they will trace this phone call and find you; then arrest you!" Without waiting for a response I hung the phone up or rather slammed the phone back onto it's holder. Facing Shannon I could see the tears forming at the rim of her eyes, threatening to stream down her cheeks.
I embraced her in a hug. "It was him, wasn't it?" She asked. I nodded, then pulled away. "Grab your phone and lets call the police."
Ring ring ring.
The landline phone rang. Shannon and I shared a glance before I picked it up. As soon as I put the phone to my ear a voice came on the line. "You just messed up." And then the line went dead. My heart immediately sank. Speechless, I hung the phone up back onto it's holder. "What? Who was it?" Shannon asked dialing 911. "He said I just messed up." I said. Those words echoing throughout my mind. "Hurry, call." I said as I walked to every window and door locking them all.
After Shannon explained what happened to the dispatch on the other end she hung up the phone and walked to me, where I was currently trying to close the last window. Locking it I turned to her. "They're on their way." She said. A few minutes past and we were sitting at the table both replaying the last minutes events. Waiting on the cops to arrive. Neither one of us spoke a word. And then a knock at the door. We both snapped our heads up towards the kitchen exit. A sigh of relief escaped my mouth. "The cops are here." Shannon said sharing the same relief. She walked out of the room. To answer the door I knew.
I got up to follow, getting ready to explain to the officer that just showed up what happened but as I started walking around the table I heard a scream. It was Shannon's scream. Relief turned to immediate fear as my eyes grew wide and alert. Another scream. "Shannon!" I yelled and ran to see what had happened. And there, standing in the living room was Jason. Shannon was locked in Jason's arm that was around her neck. A gun in hand. For the first time I came face to face with this man. He looked right at me.
"I told you, you messed up." He said. "Let her go!" I yelled. He only laughed. Instinctively I started towards them and his laugh went to a dead serious look. He pointed the gun at Shannon's head. "Stop right there! You move one muscle and I shoot her!" He threatened, forcing me to stop in my tracks. I could feel my hands balling into fists. And then turning his face towards hers he very calmly spoke. "You are coming with me. And we will leave without making a scene. Understood?"
Then he backed up towards the front door. "Where are you taking her? Let her go!!" I screamed but he wouldn't listen. He kept backing up and then turned completely around taking her along. A black Lincoln sat out front by the curb. That's the car. That was the car I saw earlier. He opened the back door and lightly shoved her inside. I watched helplessly as this man was kidnapping my sister. No. This can't be happening. Shannon! I frantically looked around to see if I could see anyone or any police car in sight but I seen nothing.
And then the car pulled away. Quickly even. I eyed the car as it drove off and managed to catch the license plate number. AE389. The tears came. My heart felt like it was ripped out of me. I fell to the ground and cried into my hands. I couldn't believe I let her slip away. I felt immediate guilt. As if I should have done more. But I knew I couldn't, he was going to shoot her if I tried anything and I couldn't risk that. But now she was in his grasp completely, where he could do whatever he wanted. And that shook me to the core.
Then I heard a car pull up. It was the police. I stood up still crying. Turning the car off, Officer Blanks stepped out and walked up to me. "Dispatch got a call from this residence, so I came." Then he looked at me puzzled and noticed me crying and I could see he understood. "Stella, where is Shannon? What happened?" I couldn't stop the tears. "He took her!!"
That's the end of this chapter. What do you guys think? Is it okay so far? What about Shannon? What do you think will happen to her? Please stay tuned and remember I look forward to everyone's feedback and I'll take acknowledgment to everyone! Thank you all again!
