It was perfect, everything lined up to a T. Near's masterpiece of cards, dominoes and building blocks had taken two hours to create, and the young boy was, well, rather tired. As he nibbled on the tip of his thumb, he contemplated his surroundings, checking every individual piece was laid out correctly. He found great pleasure in his work falling smoothly. But just as he was about to flick his pale finger out at the first domino, he heard the big, oak doors of the building slam.
Wait.
What?
He allowed himself the small movement of furrowing his brow at this. He had hardly ever heard the doors slam before, only that one time when it was compulsory for him to leave the building. When it was optional, he always chose to stay inside.
This could only mean one thing, there was a new orphan arriving. His heart skipped a beat as he glanced at the white door behind him. The only dorm here left empty. 'No!' he thought. 'This is my space! I can't have someone banging about in the room behind me while I'm trying to work!!' But as he gazed around the room, he smirked at what he himself had called 'work'.
Faint footsteps could be heard as someone padded towards the room. Near's stomach sank as he realised this person was heading straight for him. A faint black shadow appeared beneath the door. Near froze as he heard heavy breathing resound around the room.
He stood.
The doorknob rattled as the door began to open.
With a swish of long blonde hair and a turn of head, Near was face to face with his new roommate.
