"Hey!Give it back,street rat!"Adjuri shouted.
"Not likely,"Zachary whispered under his breath. He lifted up the stolen piece of bread. It was warm, despite the wind whipping his hands. It held nuts and raisins in it.
Sarah's favorite bread,he reminded himself, feeling a bit better.Holding something his older sister loved made him feel better about himself.Adjuri, the baker of whom he had stolen the bread from, was hot on his heels. But Zachary knew he'd never be able to catch up.The old and slow baker was no match for nimble him.
Zachary turned his head around to smile at him."You might wanna lose some bread,Adjuri."
Adjuri growled and stopped.Good,Zachary noted. He's given up.Zach slowed, and proceeded to lose himself in the crowd. He glanced around.Ladies and men with velvet cloaks were all around him.Could get some good money,he thought. He walked past a lady with a red cloak, nicking some dollars from her pocket, the way Robin Hood would.Sarah used to read him Robin Hood.
Zach walked to the place he called home.It wasn't much, just an old and bricky half-burnt building no one came to.But it was excellent for keeping out the wind.
He sat down in a secluded spot to eat the bread.Mentally he'd started calling it Sarah's bread.
As he finished,Zach did what he always did.
There was an old piece of white chalk that had somehow survived the previous fire.He took it,and wrote a short day's message to Sarah.
Hey Sarah!Today I stole more bread from Adjuri.
It was your favorite too,all studded with nuts.
I know you don't like stealing, but they all have more than they need.
I still miss you.
