Yaboku: Border of Shinigami's Realm - 26 Dec 2018

I watched the rain fall, creating a soft mist in the morning light. A storm of the Hason Shita neared the flickering lights of Tokyo City. The realm of Shinigami was quiet the night before last. A new soul had joined the realm. One of certain qualities. The soul was already dead, but had been Chosen.

Henry Wrath's energy was also strong that night.

According to my companion, Asahi. There have been several Phantom attacks all over the world. But for some reason—not in Tokyo. The nest of the Phantoms. As I pondered over what to do next, waiting for a corrupted wish to come to my ear, a light tap on my shoulder had me turning to face my other companion, Tenako. She had pale, white blonde hair with a pair of alluring purple eyes. A common curse among us minor Gods. Purple was the sign of vulnerability.

"Any wishes?" Tenako asked casually, her voice like smooth silk.

I chuckled once. "If there were, you would've heard it too."

She laughed. "It depends on who it would be for."

I opened my mouth to comment but another voice interrupted. "Okay, no more technicalities—Yaboku, you have a job to do, so do it." Asahi said harshly. "Tenako, if you can't at the very least make dinner then how about trying to fight off five fleets of Yōkai while trying to contact backup on a device I have never used before." Asahi said this all in a speedy record of around four seconds, mastering it with a large sigh before turning around and heading back to camp. All while mastering his hair into a relaxed fishtail. Showoff.

Even though we do jobs every now and then for the occasional God—we only do it for the money. The Gods mean nothing to us, they rule stupidly without reason and follow the laws of a deity who died millions of years ago. Not really how I would want my leadership to be. The again, I'm not a God.

But, I was the only Calamity God created by a wish. I've always believed that I should be working off and alone. Answering my wishes on my own without two other Calamity Gods interfering.

Asahi was very old fashioned, even though both of us wore yukatas, we were keeping up with the times. We all had mobile phone so that we could call when in need of back up.

I wondered what the latest batch of the dead were like. Maybe it was only a couple. Maybe only one person died recently. As I started to walk back to our never-permanent-camp, I heard a distant ringing. I straightened, looking around to see if Asahi or Tenako had reacted to the noise. They were both fighting over which card game was the best, Magic the Gathering or Uno. Obviously not.

"I'll be right back." I muttered, taking off. If people could see us 'immortals' they would think, oh those guys are so lucky! They can live forever! Well the only way to kill a God is to either stop believing in them or Stain.

Blight is an infestation created and spread by Phantoms, Yōkai and corrupted Yūrei. I've gotten Stain many times but never been really affected by it. Except for one time... It's a horrible burning sensation. Like your soul is on fire. I know that a lot of people probably would just want to steer clear of Stain altogether. But I reckon that every time I get Stain , I feel vulnerable. I feel as though l am more alive than I am dead. I cannot be reborn.

I am not like Ryūjin, who continuously does reckless things and then gets reborn like nothing matters. I have one life and intend to make last as long as possible.

I raced past trees and made sure that I didn't leave any footprints behind me.

The ringing got louder as I began to pass more buildings and soon I was in the middle of a traffic section. The flashing yellows and reds.

I spun around and forgot that everyone couldn't see me. Where was the ringing coming from? I turned slightly left and took two steps forward. I began to run the way that the ringing was loudest. I realised it was downtown. The common place for evil wishes. As the ringing became more of a headache. I finally found the white light where the promise had radiated from. A spirit?

I looked closer and recognised the familiar slant of the eyes and the raven black hair. It was Suzuki Minako. The human with the sight of a God. She was the reason I was still standing in one piece. She saved me from a full body infestation of Blight. I don't think she knew who I was until she had saved me though. Maybe if she'd known she might've left me there to die and fall to the wind.

"Yaboku." She said, her voice the same as ever.

"What happened to you?" I asked, brushing my hair from my face.

She smiled. "I was attacked by phantoms and my husband died without realising what he had gotten himself into. He couldn't see them, he couldn't see the Stain crawling up my arms and he died next to me."

I sucked in a shocked breath. It seemed as though she married a loyal man. "What did you call me for?" I asked, trying to get a move on.

"My daughter passed into the Fore Shore yesterday." Minako said patiently. "I want you to find her and bring her to the Gods without any harm coming to her. Understood?" Minako had grown more and more stressed as each word came out of her mouth.

I nodded. "My debt to you is never ending."

Minako smiled. "After this you are free of your debt, my daughter will be safe and I will never bother you again."

I looked at her, blinking a few time before coming around. "Thank you?" I said strangely. The flickering spirit turned to go. I started to walk away when my name had me stopping to a halt. She'd never called my name before.

"Yaboku! If you like owing people—then you can continue your debt to me by being my daughter's guide."

I nodded and turned, walking back into the small crowd of trees. I saw a lone white cat, stalking up and down the pathway and advanced towards it. It saw me and started to run. I chased it all the way down the path and into the forest where it clambered up a tree. I followed with ease and soon the cat was at the highest, thinnest branch with nowhere to go.

"I've got you now." I murmured.

I pulled the cat away from the garbage can it had leapt into and continued to walk down the crowded pathway. I needed to find Minako's daughter and deliver her to the Gods. She obviously hadn't been summoned yet.

I made sure the cat was safely in my arms as I crossed the cross walk like a normal person. I knew there were other people out there who could see me. I sighed, my clothing was pretty out of date.

I looked down at the stark white cat, it had blue eyes. Unlike me. In my opinion, I was more cat like than that cat was. I had ochre gold eyes with slits for pupils.

A complete help to me in the dark though. I bet the cat couldn't do that. I turned the cat over and checked—

It was a boy. Hooray!

I walked further and further away for down town and passed a gym. I wasn't sure if I was going the right way, but I could tell when a soul is dead. They aren't interacting the way a normal human would. Except for those introverts. I always got confused.

I crossed another traffic section and wondered what to call the cat snuggled in my arms. Yuuki? Nah, too obvious. What if it's actually a black cat or...I groaned, for eight hundred years old, I was pretty imaginative.
