I was in my studio, listening to music as I cleaned up the mess the kids had made during their lesson yesterday. I had started working as an art instructor when this studio was passed down to me by my parents because they decided they wanted to retire and travel the world together.
I had studied for four years for an art degree and as soon as I got it my parents handed me the studio which mom had previously used to teach ballet to young teenagers.
When I was young my mom had tried to teach me how to do ballet but I could never quite grasp the concept and instead always strayed towards my pencils and paint brushes.
When I got the studio I offered classes to kids from 7 to 15 years old and at first it wasn't doing quite well until my older brother recommended it to some of his friends who had kids.
After a year my class was filled with a total of fifteen kids coming twice a week. In my free time I would occasionally go to the elementary school that was on the same street and would volunteer to do art activities there which the principal and school staff were very grateful for.
As I finished up cleaning I looked up at the time and realized that today was Friday, one of the days I would go to the school and it was almost 1 already.
I quickly grabbed my bag and winter jacket since it was quite cold here in Winnipeg and headed out after locking the doors.
The walk to the school was very short and when I walked in and headed to the main office to tell the secretary I was there and asked her which class would attend the activity today.
"Class 031 will be with you in the vacant art room." She told me and I smiled.
I wasn't supposed to have favourites but class 031 was definitely my favourite. Ethan, a little 8 year old boy who was actually one of my students was an absolute angel and no one could resist coddling him, me included.
As I walked in the vacant art room which the school basically called it "Ms Vernon's classroom" I was met with the cheers of the kids.
"Miss Vernon!" They all exclaimed and I smiled.
"Hi guys!" I replied as I set my things down on the desk and gave a small smile to Mr. Ross who was their main teacher.
"Do you guys want to draw or paint?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"Paint!" They all said and I grinned.
"Alright. You guys know what to do right?" I asked and they all nodded, getting up and going to grab their things to paint.
As I watched over them, making sure no one spilled or broke anything I felt someone staring at me from behind.
I turned to Mr. Ross who looked like he was debating what to do.
"Everything alright?" I asked and he snapped out of it.
"Yes everything is fine." He said with a clear of throat.
