My Dearest Childhood Friend

They say we are getting older,
they say we are growing up,
they say "oh my goodness, look at you,
you have changed so much."

But what if I'm not ready,
to learn all these new things,
not ready to paint my own picture,
soar on my own two wings.

I miss the makeshift spaceships,
outrunning bad guys up in space,
I miss the fairy bread and plastic rings,
I miss your happy face.

I cherish the long ago memories,
storybooks and fun,
the building blocks we played with,
the time spent laughing in the sun.

I hoped you didn't forget it all,
I hope you remember well,
you said "can we be friends forever?"
I said "only time can tell."

Here you are, years after,
back here at my door,
reminiscing the books we used to read,
and the sauce stain that's still on the floor.

My dearest childhood friend,
I always remembered your smile,
thank you for coming back to me,
why don't you stay for a while?

We can look at my Polaroid pictures,
and talk about the memories that aren't gone yet,
we said "I promise to be loyal to my oldest friend...
and I'm never going to forget."
