Thursday during School
"Come on. Think. Think." It's Thursday and I'm at my afternoon session - Ability Detecting. It's my third year at Foxfire Academy and I still don't have an ability. My little sister, Maxine Dizznee, already got her's. She's a Hydrokinetic. I'm hoping to be a Technopath, like my dad, Dex. In Ability Detecting, our mentors, Sir Rosings and Sir Donwell are testing us for telepathy hoping one of us might be a telepath. Soon enough it's time to go to our next class and only one of us actually had a breakthrough.
Quick Note: Yes, this is a KOTLC fanfic, just keep reading I promise all will be revealed.
"I knew Ivy Vacker wouldn't be in Ability Detecting for long." Arian Endal, my friend, scoffed. "Fourth day and she got her ability - telepathy. Well, I'm glad I'm not a telepath. I don't want to be a creepy person who can know what others are thinking."
"Mmhm." I knew Arian was just sad he doesn't have an ability yet. His cousin Scarlett has her ability. Scarlett is a Pyrokinetic, which was really random since her mom is a Vanisher and her dad is a Shade. Anyways, it hurts to know your family has their abilities and you're the only one without one - the outcast. My sister has her's, my cousins Ellie and Alvia have theirs, I'm the only one without an ability, too. Arian and I understand each other like that, even if he's a fourth-year.
Thursday After School
I'm trying to read my Alchemy book, but I just can't focus. I'm glad for the distraction when my dad comes into my room.
"Your friends are coming over for a while because we have some ... announcements to make. They'll be here in a half hour so get your homework finished, " he says. Announcements? I squint to search his face for clues on what those announcements might be about. His hands are fidgeting with something - probably a small gadget - behind his back. He's nervous, but equally excited.
"Okay," I say as I turn back to my book. My dad leaves without another word. Hmm - usually he would've noticed me doing Alchemy homework and burst into a random story about when he used to find Alchemy intriguing or something. Very suspicious.
30 minutes later
"Hey, Darren!" Arian burst into my room with a wide grin on his smooth, dark skin a little while later. "Why are you here? Everyone's downstairs, c'mon!"
"Yeah, my dad said something about special announcements," I say as we walk to the sofa.
When we enter the main room, I see more people than I thought there could be in a house. There were people I knew, complete strangers, bodyguards, and councillors. Did we break a law?
I sit down on our sofa, which suddenly feels kind of uncomfortable. On the sofa are people that I do know. Well, some of them. Ivy Vacker, Jorden and Scarlett Song, Alvia and Ellie Sencen, which are actually my cousins. And Arian, who's staring off into space. My sister was talking to Lady Sophie Foster's daughter (or in other words our cousin) Ellie. Aunt Sophie is, I think, the Teleporting mentor. Ellie and Alvia's dad is Sir Keefe Sencen, who is the universe mentor and a Reagent. Oh, almost forgot! Aunt Sophie is the Enhancing mentor and a regent, like my mom. My mom is also the Pyrokinetic mentor and has like one student - Scarlett Song. Before she started teaching, she was an Emissary, but now she's a Regent. Sometimes too much work is too much work I guess. My dad is the owner of Tubes and Toples, a place where he makes gadgets and elixirs.
"Do you know where I put my jacket, Dad?" Ivy Vacker asked a man with teal eyes and brown hair. The Vacker Family. I've never really talked to any of them. There's Sir Fitz Vacker, a probe and an Emissary. Then Lady Stina Vacker, who works with alicorns at the Sanctuary. We've heard how she is the master of delivering magical creature's babies, but frankly, I think that's kind of gross. She's the Empathy mentor and an Emissary, she used to go on a lot of assignments with my mom, but now they don't talk much.
