(Sophie's POV)
I watched Keefe's expression of worry and anger rapidly turn to confusion and shock.
"So you're telling me that my maniac mother almost killed me and left me in a coma and caused everyone I know to be worried sick about me just so I would become a Polyglot?! What the heck!?" Keefe exclaimed, kicking a nearby pole in anger. I grabbed his hand to stop him and looked at him. Keefe stared back at me, affection suddenly filling his eyes.
"You may not think the ability is special, Keefe, but you are. Who else would risk his own life to protect his friends? Who else would be strong enough to deal with finding out his mother was evil? Who else would not let his mind break from guilt after they ran off to join the Neverseen? I am pretty sure no one else could deal with all the pressure you have, Keefe. Not even me, and I'm the moonlark," I said, staring into his eyes. Keefe sighed.
"You always know what to say and when to say it, Sophie. That's the reason I fell in love with you," Keefe smiled, brushing a strand of hair away from my face. I could feel my face burning up, but despite that, I hugged Keefe. He was so taken aback he just stood there for seconds before he hugged me back. We stood there for a while before he said, "What would I do without you, Sophie".
"You'll always have me," I whispered, and for a minute I was the happiest girl in the world.————————————————————————
(Keefe's POV)Sophie's words meant everything to me. I mean, no one had ever said that to me, and knowing that Foster was the first person to made my dark world a whole lot brighter. Sophie has always been like that. A shining star in a dark sky. But what made me even more surprised was when she hugged me. It didn't feel like a hug between friends, like always. It felt like something more. And her emotions were going haywire. It was weird. When Sophie finally let go, she looked at me, then became very startled.
"What's wrong, Foster?" I asked grabbing her hand when she began panicking.
"I don't know where we are, and I don't know where the others are," She said, scanning the place to find where our group landed on the ground when we teleported here.
"Maybe you could try to remember where we were?" I suggested. "Don't you have photographic memory?" I asked when Foster started looking sceptical. Sophie finally nodded and closed her eyes, focusing. After a minute, she opened her eyes again and muttered "got it" and we took off, running to a very familiar looking alley. We walked quickly to the end of the alley, only to be very shocked by what we saw. Linh, Tam and Wylie were the only ones there, Wylie on the ground with too many injuries and Linh treating them as best she could, and Tam kicking a wall multiple times. Fitz, Biana, Dex, and Marella were gone and the only thing left was the obscurer Dex had obviously finished.
"What happened here?" Sophie said, a worried emotion developing. Linh looked up at Sophie, then at Bangs Boy.
"Tam, please stop. Water doesn't help a broken foot. Sorry Sophie, we tried to stop them, but somehow Ruy's force fields got stronger, like they had an enhancer. Tam and Wylie couldn't destroy it, so Tam's shadows rebounded and hit Wylie, hence the injuries," Linh stopped for some air. "And then they kidnapped everyone else but didn't get me because Tam hid me in the shadows and I used mist for extra protection but now I feel super guilty for not helping the others and Tam tried to fix Wylie but it didn't work and now he is super badly injured and- and- I just don't know what to do!" Linh started crying as Sophie ran to her side.
"Linh, stop! You know what guilt does and I don't want your mind to break, ok? So please calm down and keep trying to help Wylie. If you need me to enhance you I can just- just please stop feeling guilty," Sophie said, resting a hand on Linh's shoulder to calm her down. Linh took a few deep breaths, smiled, and went back to healing Wylie with water. Still no idea how that works, but... whatever.
"What where you guys doing anyway?" Tam said, rubbing his foot. Idiot.
"We were trying to figure out where in this city we are, but the person I asked was rude, then Keefe came and helped me, then we got lost so I had to search for this place in my photographic memory, then we finally found the right alley, only to find this little scene played out in front of us," Sophie said rapidly, indicating to Tam, Linh and Wylie, who had woken up and was standing, brushing off his clothes while Ling wrapped a bandage around his arm.
"It isn't our fault that we were unguarded. Dex just finished the modified obscurer when they attacked. He dropped it when they grabbed him," Wylie said as Tam went and picked up the larger version of what was meant to be a small black orb. "We didn't have a chance to hide, but if we did, then it would've been pointless because they had already seen us," He finished. I looked over at Sophie, who had seemed to stop panicking and was thinking very hard about something.
"What's wrong, Foster?" I asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"How did they get here so quickly?" She said, pacing back and forth between the two buildings that formed the alley. "Before we came here, they were half drenched from Linh's flood and incapacitated from my inflicting." The situation did seem weird, considering that we had only been in this human city about 30 minutes. We were silent for a while, before Linh stood up and went over to where Sophie was standing.
"You are a very powerful telepath, Sophie. Maybe you could search through the memories of one of us and watch the scene play out yourself," She suggested.
"That actually isn't a bad idea," Foster said, looking up. Wylie put his hands up.
"Sorry, Sophie. I was busy trying to catch you up with your near death experiences for most of the battle," He said, chuckling to his own joke. "You will have to search through the memories of Tam or Linh," Wylie said, pointing to the twins. Tam opened his mouth to reply, but Foster gave him an understanding look, so he refused to speak. Sophie turned to Linh.
"Can I, Linh? Don't be alarmed. You know I have to ask permission," She said. It was true. Even though Foster is the most powerful telepath in the Lost Cities, like all telepaths she still has to ask for permission to read someone's mind or search through their memories or she would be breaking the law. Guess that doesn't really matter though.
"Sure, Sophie. As long as it helps. I guess I did see the whole scene play out," Linh shrugged. I looked at Foster, who was placing her fingers gently on Linh's forehead.
"Are you sure about this, Foster?" I asked. Sophie rolled her eyes.
"I've done this plenty of times before, Keefe. It's not like this is all brand new to me," She replied, sounding a bit too confident. I sighed, watching her in anticipation as she closed her eyes.(Authors note)
