Off-WP-Reviews

Hey friends and neighbors,

This humble experiment called *Off-Wattpad Reviews* is going to be closing its doors and shutting down, sorry to say.

After a promising start several weeks ago, and lots of great contributions from some wonderful, gifted, generous souls (i.e. you all), the project hasn't gained enough traction in the community to really be a viable resource. As such I can't justify keeping it around as part of my personal workload, so the account will be closing in approximately 24-48hrs.

This was a pretty interesting attempt at something that's never been tried before on Wattpad, and it was in the interest of addressing what seemed to be a pretty common community need. But whether O-WPR waned because the community need was to some extent illusory, or because I just didn't plan and execute the project well enough, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has participated.

You guys are awesome, and I'll catch you in the traffic elsewhere.

          	Much Respect and Aloha,
          	Jason

@Off-WP-Reviews Sorry to hear that :( Maybe it just needs a bit more time to get the momentum going?

@KenMagee That's real cool of you Ken. Thanks for being game for this one. Best of luck to you in all your projects also. Maybe our paths'll cross again sometime.

@jespah Hahah. You really need to make that a catchphrase. Not even kidding.

Suggestion: Leave the account up, and change the notice that you don't have time to maintain it. It doesn't cost anything to leave it up, and it still allows authors to connect with those who are already here.

If the account is independent of your main WP account, perhaps you could hand the account off to a volunteer to manage it?

SeeThomasHowl

@BrianGroover Hey Brian.
The thing about leaving it up un-tended is that it would basically be a mental nag for me. There isn't going to be any traffic to this account unless I go out and create it, and if I'm not doing that, it just lingers. I've done a lot of campaigning for the project, and the hope was that it would catch on and the community would power it, with me maintaining and moderating. That hasn't happened. And I'm convinced that it won't (unless I dedicated my life to it or something).

As far as passing it off, I don't have anyone in mind for that; and no one's come forward. In my mind it was a cool idea that worked okay for a little while, bit it's ultimately a failed attempt, and that's what another person would be inheriting.

          Category:
          Contemporary Romance

          Description:
Colm Herron, one of Ireland’s most gifted storytellers, brings wry humour and acute insight to bear on his portrayal of Derry folk in The Wake (and What Jeremiah Did Next). The raucous human panorama unfolds through the eyes of Jeremiah. Earthy wake banter, competition for the love of a bisexual activist, and the civil rights march through Burntollet in early 1969, when violence shattered Northern Ireland’s fragile peace, are vehicles for this shrewd, sympathetic and unique commentary on the human condition.

          From the author:
Please do not feel that a review has to be polished or professional. If you are enthusiastic about my novella please express that in a straightforward way in two or three lines. Thanks!

From the Fussy Librarian newsletter:

"QUESTION: Of the ebooks you've read in the past six months, for what percentage have you posted a review?

          None: 44 percent
          25-49%: 36 percent
          50-74%: 9 percent
          75-99%: 7 percent
          All: 4 percent

With reviews, most readers don't think it's important to leave one. So we end up with the extremes shaping the conversation -- top heavy and bottom heavy with fans and haters and little in the middle. Now I'm not saying that having all books rated at 3.0 is going to be better for sales -- it's not. But my theory is a book with more reviews (say 50) will fare better over the long haul than a book with 10, all other things being equal.

There's some similarities to this problem with readers' perceptions of what's a fair ebook price. Just like we've done a terrible job of educating readers about the huge difference a $2.99 price can make as far as royalties, we've also failed to educate readers about why it's important to leave a review."

challengethemind

@Off-WP-Reviews I have to say that since I entered the world of the Indie author I have truly seen the value and importance of honest reviews. I'd never left a review before, other than when we had to review the class novel as homework in school, more years ago than I care to remember.

It's the only way to improve visibility; to have our hard work seen. If potential readers don't see our work being marketed by Amazon or whatever site the book is for sale on, how will they know it exists?

I now leave reviews for every book I read that warrants 3 or more stars. I would rate a book lower than 3 stars. Not sure if I'd leave a review in that instance though. I'm pretty happy with my choice of stories to read as I tend to go with authors I know I enjoy, and off recommendations from people who's opinion I trust.

I have recently had the experience of people wanting to leave a review for me on Amazon, but because they bought their paperback directly from me as it isn't available in Australia, they were unable to leave a review. Readers have to have an account AND they have to have made a purchase. I thought this was a shame as many people still prefer physical copies of books as opposed to eBooks and as such may not shop on Amazon, preferring to go the old fashioned route of a bookstore!
I guess I will have to refer them to Goodreads. ;)

@WomanInSydney Ayo :D

Pretty much just to get a sense of a book's review history (and to see whether or not it has one) right off the bat.

This is all information that can be found by visiting Amazon, but it save a little time if the author's provide it; and I hope it communicates that O-WP-Rs isn't a book dump or a way to administer CPR to anybody's dead books.

            If that makes any sense.

@Off-WP-Reviews Thanks for this, Jason! I've been reluctant to put THE DANDELION KNIGHT on Wattpad, but this might be what makes me do it. :)

Hey people,

As kinks are being worked out here at Off-Wattpad Reviews, here are some early changes:

-THE SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES have been done away with. A submission form is now openly available on this account's profile page.

-FEATURES will be additional, stand-alone listings granted to authors who review at least one book of their peers'.

Thank you for being one of our initial followers, and keep on spreading the word!

          Jason
