I firmly believe that the strong feeling of rivalry/mutual grudge that Gym Leader Piers feels towards the brothers Sordward and Shielbert is basically a metaphor of the Punk Revolution that took hold during the Sixties and the Seventies in the United Kingdom. 
          
          The Punk Revolution (personified by Piers) fought in the name of the ideals of individualism and nonconformism against the self-righteousness, the hypocrisy and the haughtiness of the higher social classes (personified by Sordward and Shielbert).
