I'm in this constant turmoil right now, torn between: giving my readers what they want, and following through with the ship I had set for myself, as well as writing something I don't necessarily want to write.
Doing whatever I want, and dealing with all the backlash I get by just saying "it's my story, I do what I want."

It is YOUR story. You should do whatever YOU want with it. If someone doesn't like it, they can leave and miss out on an amazing story. It's their own fault if they have a problem. Whatever you do, keep writing what makes you happy. :)
