Prompt: 5 mins to write about your secret being discovered

There's a shout from the kitchen — and the world ends.

Not in the explosive sort of way, where one minute every family in the world is engaged in some variety of dinner, and the next, nothing. So fast no one has time to hear it.

I can hear it. One very distinct word: Jenny! It's loud, in the way you might expect the end of the world to be, but the fear that is now rattling in my chest and forming bile in the back of my throat is not explosive at all.

The end of the world is slow and ridiculous. It is a feeling that only a child can gauge, because only children fail to understand that the world is not their world. It is an agonising feeling, the gradual realisation that he has found it, and is no doubt standing over the dustbin, his hands splintered with ceramic as he picks the pieces of the dish out of the trash, one by one, like coins from a wishing well. Slow. Slow.
