"i'm dying," the familiar voice drawled out, sniffling slightly.

you rolled your eyes fondly at the sound of jack's whining. if there was one thing that hadn't changed in the fifteen years you two had known each other, it was his behavior when he was sick.

he was whiny, and needy, and a literal child. though, it wasn't much different than usual.

"you're not dying, bub," you laughed to yourself as you brought some hot soup over. you placed it on the desk next to the bed. you felt jack's forehead for a fever, frowning slightly as he seemed to have a slight one, "you're just a little sick."

"no, Y/N," he insisted, shaking his head. "i know what a cold feels like. this, this is worse. i'm really sick."

"jack, you say that every time," you told him, standing up with your hand on your hips. "you're not dying. it's a cold, and you'll get better in a few days. right now, you need to rest. drink lots of fluids, and have your soup. i'll grab a hot-water bottle. okay?"

he gave a noncommittal hum, and you rolled your eyes to yourself as you prepared the hot-water bottle.

once it was ready, you carried it back to the room just in time to see jack finishing the last of his soup.

"here, bubba," you handed him the hot-water bottle, and he lay on his stomach, sighing in relief as it was pressed to his back.

"much better," he sighed.

"see?" you grinned. "not dying."

"Y/N," jack called out, grabbing your wrist as you turned.

"hmm?" you asked, sitting on the ground next to the bed. "you need anything else?"

he nodded, "i need you. lay with me."

you smiled to yourself. jack loved holding you, having you around, especially when he was sick.

"bubba, you're sick," you told him. "and as much as i love you, i'm not too interested in getting sick. i have a game tomorrow."

"we don't have to cuddle," he said to you. "we'll just lay on the same bed. and i wanna hold your hand. please."

you closed your eyes, giving in, "five minutes. i don't wanna get sick."

a smile lit up jack's face, and you couldn't help but smile back.

you lay next to him, your hand in his.

"talk to me," jack said, sniffling slightly. "how'd your day go? which team are you going against tomorrow? you nervous?"

you smiled lightly as you answered all of his questions. his eyes drooped as you continued talking and you could tell he was fighting to stay awake.

you brushed his hair back from his forehead, "go to sleep. you need the rest."

jack's smile grew lazily as you played with his hair. "yeah, yeah. just gonna... gonna take a quick nap."

you continued playing with his hair, massaging his head lightly, as his eyes closed and he went to sleep.

"i love you," jack muttered, eyes closed.

you grinned, "i love you too."

the smile on jack's face grew, and you could've sworn you felt your heart melt. you could deal with him and his whiny attitudes for the rest of your life, you knew that.

as long as you got to see him smile like that.
