CAROLINE WINCED AS THE door creaked behind her when she closed it and locked it. She had agreed to meet the boys down in the courtyard so that they could head out to the cave together. She had a couple candy bars stuffed in her coat pockets, per Charlie's request, but she regretted bringing something that had a wrapper because with every step she took, the plastic crinkled loudly.
"Caroline."
The girl jumped at the quiet but sharp whisper that came from behind her. She spun around to see Charlie standing at the end of the hallway. She furrowed his eyebrows at him. "What the hell are you doing? I said I'd meet you guys down there."
"I though I'd be a gentleman and walk you down," he explained, his whisper getting louder.
"Okay, okay." Deciding that they were about to wake up the entire school sooner or later, Caroline walked lightly to him, careful not to make any noise. They walked to the top of the stairs in silence, but they both started down at the same time, which was not going to work. Caroline stepped aside and gestured for Charlie to go first. "Ladies first."
