They work in a simple way; at the age of 18, everyone has a symbol representing their soulmark. If the other person has a matching symbol, then they are soulmates. This works the same with people who have multiple soulmates. The only difference is next to the mark there is a little number that counts down how many soulmates to meet. Once touched, the number goes down. After all, if soulmates are found, then there is no need for numbers; they disappear.
